Quickie Review: Ellen DeGeneres - For Your Approval

I have to admit, there were several solid laughs in this Netflix special. She attempted to explain away her backstage behavior by stating she never thought of herself as a boss and that she never studied business or management in school, but in hindsight she admitted constantly scaring or shouting at people was… indeed… mean. DeGeneres was always a strong observational comic, and she covered ADD, OCD, chickens, growing old, and Hollywood in this special. I don’t think it will convince anyone who dislikes her to like her, but she still has the talent, even if this does turn out to be the last time she uses it.

I also watched this after reading several articles about it. It was an hour plus of standup crafted to be a standup routine. John Mulaney did a Netflix special, Baby J, which was all about his addiction and recovery, and from the articles I think people expected she was going to, or needed to, do something similar. That’s not what she intended to do and I wouldn’t judge her hour on those terms.

Her audience for the special was rabid fans who were going to take her side and it would have made no sense to provoke them with uncomfortable confessions. When she brought up her show and the circumstances that ended it she did it as part of the act and built towards punchlines.
