Semi-related, the right wing today is having a field day posting links to “leftists” who originally defended Smollett (count me among them). They are being typically viscous towards Elliot (formerly Ellen) Page, because they cannot resist attacking anyone in the LGBTQ community. 

Worth noting that liberals who stood by Smollett were quick to denounce him once his true character was revealed. And yet a recent poll shows 2/3 of conservatives continue to stand by Trump even after it has been proven the big lie was in fact a lie, and that the insurrection against the nation they claim to love was fueled by he and his people. 

So while they are attacking a transgendered person for standing by someone until it became clear that someone is in the wrong, they refuse to set that same standard for themselves.

I have been having a frank and honest exchange with a conservative online conversation partner about just this. In the Age of Trump (though to be fair there were strong signs of this under W. Bush)  this may be the clearest defining feature of what it means to be a Political Conservative in this country. 

Liberals are open to unfolding evidence and are willing to change positions if indicated. Conservatives stake out a position, ignore unfolding evidence, and rigidly stay with a position.

Liberals think it is a sign of strength and intelligence for those who first supported Smollett to have switched to condemning him when evidence emerged he was lying. Conservatives think this a sign of weakness and stupidity (stupid because they think admitting a mistake is bad for the brand).

He's off to county jail for 150 days, followed by 30 months probation; he owes the city just over $150k.

Appeals court orders him released until his appeal is heard, if he posts $150k bond.

His lawyer believed the actor was being kept in solitary -- the prosecutor noted Cook County did away with it years ago...

Appeals panel upholds Smollett's conviction. One of the three judges dissented, and another appeal to state Supreme Court is planned.
