Friday on Awful Announcing, Andrew Bucholtz reported the company that almost merged with Tribune Media beat out a Liberty Media-MLB combo and the group that owns specialty basketball brand BIG3.  There'll still be the Federal scrutiny to wait out, dodgy on its own given the hissing over Trib.

I'm guessing Fox Business, who broke the story, embargoed any other reports...

Sinclair to buy regional Fox Sports networks for $9.6B
NEW YORK (AP) - Media company Sinclair Broadcasting Group is buying Fox's regional sports networks for $9.6 billion.
The Walt Disney Co. agreed to sell the networks to get regulatory approval for its $71 billion acquisition of Fox's entertainment assets, which was completed in March.
The 21 networks include exclusive local rights to 42 professional teams, including 14 Major League Baseball teams, 16 National Basketball Association teams and 12 National Hockey League teams. Hunt Valley, Maryland-based Sinclair is also buying Fox College Sports. The New York Yankees' YES Network is being sold separately by Disney.
Byron Allen, CEO of independent television and film studio Entertainment Studios, will be a partner in Diamond Sports Group, the new Sinclair subsidiary that will incorporate the regional sports networks.
The U.S. Justice Department must approve the sale.

Two pieces on Awful Announcing showing the highs and lows of this deal:

Sean Keeley (deriving from Dade Hayes of Deadline and John Ourand of the paywalled Sports Business Journal) noted Sinclair stock soared after the announcement, but that the new owner likely will seek to make the bucks back through higher distributor fees...

...and Andrew Bucholtz (quoting a stock analyst interviewed by Ourand) additionally noting the dilemma of basic-or-premium for the channels, either side of which potentially would cost the channels and their carriers longterm...

Watching Rays games next season, I’m just going to pretend the channel is named after the pinball machines.

"I thought I was the Bally table king
But I just handed my pinball crown to him."
