The quickly-drafted proposal passed both chambers of the state legislature and awaits DeSantis' sig, even though one of the two county tax collectors involved told V it would cost his county $163mil/year to take over the applicable services and obligations...

I've been following this story for a number of reasons; the FL GOP seem to be so intent on punishing Disney for daring to take a stand against a piece of legislation that they're willing to a) piss off the state's largest employer, b) burden two counties with massive infrastructure that they've never previously been responsible for, and c) lob a multi-billion dollar tax bill at the RESIDENTS of said counties.

Meanwhile, if a DEMOCRAT attempted to push this legislation at ANY point, all of the Republicans would be clutching their pearls and screaming about how the Dems are anti-capitalist and anti-business.

If I were running Disney, I'd say "Fine. You want it? It's yours -- starting immediately. We get a billion-dollar tax break and you get to explain to residents why they suddenly have to pay $2200 each."

Disney knows well enough not to give into the bait and let things resolve before they pay a cent in new taxes. But if I were running Disney I’d say we were planning a major refresh of Disney World but under current circumstances we’d be open to building a new one instead in a state that gave us a favorable tax package. Then, like what happened with Amazon and sports teams, sit back and wait for proposals. Then I’d go to the Florida state government and tell them to match the best one or else.

The state of Florida issued the bonds and holds the debt. And the bill to dissolve the special tax district doesn’t take effect until next year so Disney can sit tight and let the state government twist itself around trying to get out of the damage they are causing themselves.
