Longtime members of this group know I used to refer to Shannen as “my future ex-wife”. I felt she was, if not a kindred spirit, at least someone who made as bad (or worse) decisions than I was making at the time (both personally and professionally). 

I worked very briefly on Conan O’Brien’s Late Night when the show visited LA, and we were shooting a comedy bit in producer Aaron Spelling’s office. Off camera, Conan was asking Aaron why he had cast Shannen in “Charmed” when she had a proven reputation for volatility on and off the set. Spelling replied that in spite of (maybe because of) all the drama, people found Doherty very watchable… she guaranteed ratings. That conversation summed up Hollywood to me. People can’t resist watching a hot mess, so give the public what they want, even if it makes everyone involved miserable.

I never saw a moment of BH 90210 or Charmed, and almost all of my knowledge of and interest in her has come vicariously through Kevin. That has included periodic reports of her cancer Dx and other personal struggles, and I have found myself rooting for her. Echoing Melissa’s condolences for Kevin.

Kevin Smith posted a video with Shannen last night.  A pilot from a thing I never remember hearing about. Fox did a shortcom contest which never came to fruition. People would submit like 10 minute sitcoms and the winner of them would get a full sitcom order. 

Kevin did one and got Shannen to come costar with him in it.  I figured our Kevin would enjoy it.

I listened to Rose McGowan guest hosting what was Shannen’s podcast, Let’s Be Clear, this week. I don’t know much about McGowan except she’s had her own struggles and has been somewhat controversial in the way she’s chosen to speak out about some of them. It sounds like Rose and Shannen connected/bonded in recent years via the convention circuit, and the podcast sounded very cathartic for her. It was an interesting listen.
