Lisa LaFlamme got fired after 35 years at the major commercial network CTV and eleven years anchoring Canada's top-rated newscast (which is at 11 p.m. instead of the dinner hour)--she was told her contract was not being renewed at the end of June and then told not to say anything until this week--and instead of a formal sendoff like her veteran predecessor Lloyd Robertson (inspiration for "SCTV"''s "Floyd Robertson" and "Count Floyd," even though the real Robertson never hosted horror movies), she left a goodbye on Twitter from her home--the newsroom is not very happy at the current head of the news department, who seems to have a problem with outspoken women and 58-year-old-women on TV:

Oh yes, LaFlamme's being replaced by a 39-year-old man and her counterparts at the CBC and Global are both women.

Good opinion piece which digs a little deeper into other media issues next door.

But hey, Sandie Rinaldo is still on the weekend shift. She’s anchored since 1985, save for a year’s interlude when that “Dateline” guy filled in.

The problem here is that the National Post is to the CBC what the Daily Mail is to the BBC and Rupert Murdoch's holdings are to public broadcasting in general.  The fact that the columnist includes a rant on Canadian content in media (which radio stations have had to go by now for over 50 years and is not going to go away anytime soon) goes right along with that (along with the primary owner being an American hedge fund).  Just remember that an attempt by the Toronto Sun to do a Fox News-style conservative cable news network in Canada turned out to be a huge flop.

Meh. The Globe & Mail has a paywall, so I went to the next national outlet.

But on a related topic, there’s a bill (C-11) going through Parliament in which the CRTC wants to assert its Cancom rights on streamers.

If you do a search for C-11 on da Toob, the content providers will explain why they think it’s a bad idea.
