As we're days away from upfronts, here's how last season went, according to The Wrap:

Comments:  All cancelled ABC shows have played off their episodes as far as I know, except for "Don't Trust the B_____," which will burn off online.  Shondra had already announced that it was "Private Practice"'s last season.  As for the rest, my guess is that "Red Widow," "Splash," "The Taste" and "Wife Swap" are dead, "Happy Endings" is going to USA and "Nashville," "The Neighbors," "How to Live With Your Parents" and "Body of Proof" are on the bubble.  Too soon on "Family Tools."

CBS:  "The Job"'s episodes have yet to burn off, the other cancellations have completed.  Of the pendings, my guess is that "CSI:  NY," "Golden Boy" and "Rules of Engagement" are done and "Vegas" is on the bubble.  "Friend Me" has yet to be scheduled, due to its showrunner committing suicide.  I am not kidding.

CW:  All cancelled shows have played out.  Of the pendings, I'm calling "Carrie Diaries" done and "Nikita" coming back.

FOX:  Of the cancelled shows, "Ben and Kate" is burning off in late-night Saturday and there are probably some unaired "Cops" eps that may air in syndication or on cable first.  "Fringe" has ended.  Of the pendings, "Cleveland" will probably be back, since they don't have anything in the cartoon pipeline for prime time, "Touch" is done and "Goodwin Games" premieres May 20 (but already had an episode order cut, which is not a good sign, not to mention that Fox isn't promoting it while they've been promoting "Does Someone Have to Go?" up the wazoo).

NBC:  "Animal Practice," "Do No Harm" and "Ready for Love" all have unaired eps and may show up online or on a Network of NBCU.  "Next Caller," the Dane Cook sitcom, may be burned off online if they ever let it out.  "The Office" and "30 Rock" left of their own accords.  In the pendings, "Up All Night," "Smash," "Deception" (originally titled "Infamous"), "Fear Factor," "Take It All" (the renamed title of "Howie Mandel's White Elephant"--and what a prescient title that one was) and "Stars Earn Stripes" are all dead or probably dead and I'm guessing all other sitcoms and "Hannibal" are on the bubble (including "Parks and Rec," which may call a final season--"Community" needs two more for "SIX SEASONS AND A MOVIE!").  "Save Me" premieres May 23, the day after the end of May sweeps--they're promoting it, but I say summer burnoff.

I'd be surprised if Community came back. I've been keeping up through inertia and the show isn't going anywhere.

Didn't see this mentioned here earlier, but Spike TV picked up "Cops" for a fall debut in its Saturday 8pm slot:

Which reminds me of something I've been meaning to bring up: why is NBC running repeats of SNL on Saturdays at 10pm? They've been doing this for at least two months now, forming an effective SNL doubleheader (interrupted by local news). I'm still an SNL fan, but the show is over-exposed even without this.

They've been giving "Smash" a dignified funeral by burning off its leftover episodes on Saturday night; I don't understand why they don't do the same with "Do No Harm," which probably cost them a pretty penny and now seems like money gone completely to waste. I know the networks have been doing this for years, but I've never understood why NBC and CBS don't air leftover episodes of canceled shows when they both basically have a whole night devoted to repeats from other nights of the schedule.

I've posted this before, but I keep hoping that NBC will finally air
the final episode of "Grand."

ABC would have been better off running "Splash" & "The Taste" as summer series. "Splash", in particular, seems like a good companion show for "Wipeout", and "The Taste" was a serviceable food variant of "The Voice", albeit with issues; it was watchable primarily because of Tony "Bastard Chef" Bourdain.

NBC might give "Community" another frame if they don't see many comedies worth ordering out of pilot season, but now that Chevy's gone, they should really think about bringing Dan Harmon back to help the show rediscover its voice.  (And speaking of Chevy being gone...would it be so awful if, should the show get renewed, Pierce is suddenly being played by Fred Willard instead?)

If by awful you mean freakin hilarious, than yes (without any comment or explanation, of course). For a minute I actually thought that was what they were doing when they picked up again...

If I were a television critic, I think I would try to develop a rating system that measured two characteristics of each show on the primetime schedule: 1) Commercial success (ratings weighted by time slot and network, kind of like TVBTN does, but also by profit - total revenues generated minus costs) and 2) Creative success (somethink like a Metacritics average, perhaps added to some metric of Emmys+Golden Globe nominations, social media "buzz). Score each of these on a 100 point scale, add the two together. Then each year, maybe around this time, before the upfronts, give each network (and, perhaps more to the point, each current network decision-maker) a score based on an aggregation for each show he or she approved on the current year's schedule. Sometimes current decision-makers had no role in many or all of a current's year's succeses or flops.

The oldest cliche in the history of prediction is that the best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. If I am trying to sell soap, it seems like I would be at least as interested in how succesful a current decision-maker has been with previous decisions as I am in a 2 paragraph summary of a new show that decision-maker has put on the schedule for next year. Yes, I want my soap commerical on the program that as many people as possible watch, but I think I also want to do as much buissiness as possible with managers who have a track record of making good decisions.

One more NBC:  "Fashion Star" on the bubble, but if Macy's, Saks and Express are making money from the clothes sales tie-ins, the show could be back, if not on NBC, on Bravo, Oxygen or Style Network.

Alan Kirschenbaum, whom I remember from Coach. That was back in October... don't remember seeing that originally.  -- BOB
