It wouldn't have fit Bob's character to treat his wife as drop-dead gorgeous; the Hartleys were supposed to be relatable as they dealt with all the craziness around them. (And the finale of Newhart proved that Ms. Pleshette didn't mind how she'd been portrayed.)
