I thought the most interesting line was the final one: "Merrill Markoe serves as a consulting producer."
If memory serves, she created the segment.

And remember…this isn’t a competition. Please, no wagering.

Yes, she did, and this is an obvious way to make sure she's compensated for it.

I always thought that one reason the segment worked so well was that they didn't do it too often. We'll find out if I was right.

I'm afraid that this is a competition: "[P]et parents join their furry (or scaley!) friends in the quest to be crowned with the coveted title of Stupidest Trick of the Week." Wager at your own risk.

Another quote from the article that shows that someone Gets It:
Brett Weitz, General Manager of TBS, TNT and truTV:. “David Letterman is an entertainment legend who changed the face of broadcast history with three simple words: ‘Stupid Pet Tricks.’"

Compared to "Stupid Human Tricks" (This is a competition, wagering is encouraged.)

I always thought that one reason the segment worked so well was that they didn't do it too often. We'll find out if I was right.

And they didn't let the segment go on for half an hour.
