I am interested in what you found perceptive in this take? Was it his view that God ordained Leno to host the Tonight Show, or that anyone would have hid in the closet while the bosses had a meeting to decide your fate?

As a Christian whose pastor is a fan of the Patriots, I frequently point out that God does not have a preference in sports teams, but if He did it would not be the Patriots. Likewise, God does not have a preference in talk show hosts, but if He did it would be Colbert.

"That David Letterman felt compelled to humiliate him was disgusting. I’ve always said that I’m lucky my guy talked to me whenever I called.”

If that doesn't count as perceptive, I don't know what does.

I’m not sure how perceptive that is. On the one hand it is a pretty common take on Letterman (including in some form by me, including relatively recently here on this list) on the other, I think it is pretty reductive and distorted. For much of his career, he reserved his real bite in making fun of guests for those he considered powerful and famous (or chasing power and fame). He mostly was less harsh with regular folks, though sometimes did cross the line, and when he did it was gross.

Roebuck’s take though is consistent with my memory of that entire movie. I really liked the book, but the film was simplistic and reductive and amounted to little more than second rate impersonations of famous people.
