Children of the rich can get preferential treatment in admissions to upper-echelon schools if the parents grease the wheels with a little financial "donation"?

I'm shocked.  Shocked, I say!

I just hope nobody uncovers evidence children of rich people are getting jobs they aren’t qualified for within their parents’ companies. Because that would be really disheartening.

My thought earlier today when I heard the headline, or a synopsis of the case, I thought "imagine being those kids knowing that their parents bought their way in".

But then I heard some details of the kids posing for photos for rowing scholarships (when they had never rowed before in their life) I withdraw my original thought above.

The most surprising aspect is that anyone, no matter how rich or how stupid, would invest so much money and effort to get their kids into USC.

He just said "Hollywood," as if that meant everything.  Besides, I thought Lori Laughlin was a Republican--or am I getting her mixed up with Candace Cameron Bure, since they were both on the same show?

Besides, seems to me that the Tim Allen show that the Trumpies love so much is filmed in Hollywood, not in Atlanta or at Pat Robertson's place in Virginia Beach.

Also note: If there were more celebrities ensnared by this operation, we'd have heard about them by now. So, mostly wealthy, but not Hollywood, people.

Another target is a wealthy winery operator here in Napa Valley (though it looks like he lives in the City). Looks like most of these parents are general entitled wealthy people (though I have always enjoyed Huffman’s work, but pissed media is tagging her with Housewives label instead of Sports Night, which obviously has priority).

I checked in with my late 20s daughter and her BF, both Ivy grads who were not smart enough to choose wealthy parents to buy their way in, to find out what they and their friends thought. As I suspected, they lacked the extreme moralized indignation that we have seen from so many of the upper middle class (but not actually upper class) media types have been indulging in. They and their friends mostly shaking their heads, but see this as a minor example of the much more pervasive practice of children of the elite classes getting into Ivy League level schools though legacy, donations and influence rather than ability or hard work.

David Mamet (friend of Huffman and Macy) has commented to the effect that he sees no difference between bribing universities by donating a building, and bribing third parties to perpetrate fraud on said universities. David Mamet is a moron.

There is a difference, just as there is a difference between somebody scoring drugs from a dealer on the street vs somebody scoring drugs from a doctor in a lab coat. To paraphrase the late Spenser/Jesse Stone author Robert B Parker, police aren’t in the right and wrong business, they are in the legal and illegal business. Giving money directly to a school to influence its admissions policies is legal, but it is also just as wrong as the indirect methods used by the people who were charged yesterday.

Hallmark Channel has parted with her.

This ostensibly followed a hearing where her bail was set at $1mil, and she was allowed to travel to Vancouver, where the multiple series she (ahem) was involved with were produced.

'Fuller House' actress gets co-star's support
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Actress Candace Cameron Bure says "family sticks together no matter what," in what seems a sign of support for "Fuller House" co-star Lori Loughlin, who has been charged in an alleged college admissions scandal.
Bure delivered that message in her acceptance speech Saturday night at the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Funny TV Show. She later shared those thoughts on Instagram.
Loughlin and her husband, fashion designer Mossimo Giannulli, are among dozens who been charged in the alleged admissions scam in which wealthy parents are accused of bribing coaches and other insiders to get their children into elite schools.
Prosecutors allege the couple paid $500,000 to have their daughters labeled as crew-team recruits at the University of Southern California, even though neither is a rower.

Born Again extremists like the Cameron family are required to forgive, since they constantly commit so many other atrocities they need forgiveness from others.

I admit, as a Christian I struggle with forgiveness, but I’ll forgive when I see indications of remorse. I’ve not seen Aunt Becky show remorse or accept responsibility or make amends. So f*ck her.

Amen.

Huffman agrees to plead guilty. No explanation why Macy wasn't charged. I'm guessing they didn't file a joint tax return and only Huffman claimed the bribe as a deduction.

This is a lot of prison time hanging over her head. She might want to have a chat with OJ on getting a full acquittal. It worked once, sure. But he ended up doing nine years in max for a first-time robbery offense.

She was the benefactor of the criminal wrongdoing of others.

Apparently Hollywood was all out of qualified, experienced actors for the role. Yep. That must be it. Nobody else was available.

Since her benefit was a college education are you saying she should be disqualified for any employment that demands a degree?

I've read enough about the TV business to know that an actor needs to go through a ridiculous number of approval processes to land a role: casting director, director, studio, network (if they're not the same), etc. If her parents' wrongdoing was an issue it would have come up earlier.

I’m saying somebody else out there is more deserving/qualified, and that she was not chosen based on her acting ability, but in her family’s clout in the industry.

An actor without connections has to go through a rigorous process, agreed. The college admissions scandal proved her family was willing to use their connections and even break the law to give her opportunities she hadn’t earned. I have no reason to believe her mother learned her lesson. I’m sure the daughter didn’t learn her lesson .

From what I read of court proceedings it's standard for the defense to ask for summary dismissal of the charges at the beginning of the trial. It's rare that they get a judge to agree but they give it a shot because you never know.
