So did Variety (link). Others, such as Extra (link), reported she'd battled diabetes for years. B

She had some of the best comic timing in the business. She could sell a joke with a look or an eye roll. She could make a bad joke great with a double take or a pregnant pause. She could keep up and often be better than greats like Dick Van Dyke and Ed Asher.

I had just sat down to lunch when "Outside the Lines" came on the TV (they'd turned down the sound AND had Seacrest on the radio... nitwits)... they'd whipped out awl the old tapes, even a younger Ley at that bas-relief-background SportsCenter desk with Boomer after Brent left CBS, even... Katherine Webb...

I have had a bumpy ride with Brent. I was a big fan in his early years at CBS, then became an early adopter of the Brent is a Baffoon school of thought. Later, when he resurrected on espn college football, I found that I liked him again. I am not sure how much if that reflects his actual performance, and how much is change in my perception; granted that it is some of both, I do think he started strong, then started smoking his own shit, then got humbled and became more genuine even when idiosyncratic

Ironic. I was going to start a thread in this group about which shows
age well and which don't. It was prompted on Saturday by a sixteenish
girl turning to her 6-year-old sister and saying, "You've got spunk,
Tawny. I HATE spunk."
Turns out she and her friends binge-watched Mary Tyler Moore over
Christmas break. Her parents (well, her father) have a massive
collection of old TV shows on DVD that he's bought off eBay. Mary
Tyler Moore rated viewing but most others did not not
It would be interesting to hear the group's opinion on which shows
aged well. I think Mary Tyler Moore Show does because the it was
well-written and well-acted.

CBS devoted remarkable attention to the Dallas Cowboys in the 1970s
and early 1980s and Brent Musberger was the face that did that. I
disliked him solely for that reason.

I agree with you. It is the ONLY show of that era that's just as worth watching today as it was back then.

My memory of that era includes Phyllis George, Brent, Cowboys, dolphins, steelers, and that movie where terrorists attached a bullet boat to the blimp.

We didn't discuss the Bob Newhart show. That one slipped my mind.
But they weren't keen on Happy Days, MASH, All in the Family, The
Jeffersons, Good Times, Sanford & Sons and Get Smart.
They started watching The Munsters but that got old, they said.

I was going to sat Bob Newhart stands up pretty well - except for the suits.

Get smart is an earlier era, but my 19 year old son fell in love with it when I introduced him to it about 5 years ago.

About 5-years-ago I was riding on Amtrak from San Diego to Orange County. Two girls were seated a few rows ahead of me engaged in a heated (dare I say passionate) debate over the relative sexiness of Tom Selleck in "Magnum P.I." comparing him favorably to all the current leading male heartthrobs. The women debating this were college girls. Apparently Selleck's hunkiness has also aged well across the generations.

The summer before I started my doctoral program in clinical psychology I ent to the American Psychological Convention and attended a session which screened *Ordinary People* and then had a few famous clinicians discuss it. I taught a college course on Principles of Counseling for 25 years, and I screened that film every year. I not only know every one of her lines, but practically every movement of every facial muscle. Its a wonderful performance, and what I found is that the older I got, the less I onl thought of her as a bitch, and the more I felt sorry for her.

Agree on Happy Days and Get Smart. Semi-agree on MASH and All in
the Family (i.e. I've enjoyed small doses of those).

Two old shows that I've enjoyed recently are "The Addams Family"
(taf) and "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" (ramli).

While viewing ramli, my eyes seem to be too old to finish reading
(before they disappear) some of the signs and words painted on
bodies. Does anyone know if some of those types of jokes have been
edited more tightly (to save time for commercials)?

But I've been pleasantly surprised at how well the political humor
holds up. E.g. in one "News from the Future" joke, Rowan mentioned
that the Berlin wall came down in 1989.

And in a joke in the (then) current news, they mentioned a police
dept's "stop and frisk" policy. Other jokes referenced predatory
lending practices that had been outlawed by the (then) recently
passed "Truth in Lending" law.

I also like that all those shows have closed captions now.

Wouldn't surprise me, given at least two cable channels (Nick and Trio) have had them.  B
