AMC has green-lit a Breaking Bad prequel focusing on Saul Goodman:

I was trying to think the other day of a comparably great addition to an already great drama as Odenkirk's addition to BB. Like so many elements on this show, if you told me Gilligan had structured the show all along to add Saul just when he did I would believe it; it is impossible to imagine the show without him now.

I will watch the new show even if it stinks, just out of gratitude.

Below is the first post I could find in the list archives about “Better Call Saul”, happens to be from me, September 11 2013.  As it turned out, 9 years later, the show didn’t stink, I did watch every second of it, and I am very grateful.

Vince Gillian is now clearly responsible for more hours of high quality television than anyone in history. You can argue over which golden age cable drama was best (Sopranos, The Wire, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Deadwood, is my top 5, maybe a few other contenders). But none of the creators of any of the other contenders ever backed it up with a show that is no worse than top ten, and arguably belongs in the top 5 itself.

I guess David Simon could stake a claim, as he is responsible for The Wire and HLOTS, the latter for sure a top 5 broadcast drama, and maybe top ten-ish including cable. But, while the show was based on his book, and he was a producer in the later seasons, and a staff writer, I don’t think he really was the show runner (or am I wrong about that?). David Milch maybe is in the conversation, depending on how highly you want to rate NYPD Blue.

In any case, it has been such a pleasure to watch Odenkirk’s work on this show, and the rest of the cast was wonderful too, with particularly stellar performances by Rhea Seehorn (Kim) Michael McGill (Chuck) and Michael Mando (Nacho).

Having just finished the finale, I will now dive into a re watch of BB.
