In this evening's SNL Classic, John Hurt played the Hare in an Alice in Wonderland themed sketch.  As is custom, he was thanked at the end.

But he was also in the opening credits, listed before the host and after mention of that night's Smigel cartoon.  I haven't been able to find out what warranted this special treatment, and I can't remember it happening.  I suspect there were similar mentions in the SNL opening during the earliest seasons, but I can't be sure.  Anyone have any insights here?

This was an episode from 1998.
The only other time I remember them doing that was in 1995, when John Goodman was hosting and Don Pardo said "special appearance by Dan Aykroyd." I believe Aykroyd was in almost every skit, including a memorable sendup of Tom Snyder's Late Late Show.

I recall a show in (looks it up) 1998, where Garth Brooks was the host/musical guest, but Robert Duvall also appeared in several sketches. I don’t know if he was mentioned as a “featured guest” in the opening credits.

I feel like there was a point in the later ‘90s when Jan Hooks was no longer a NRFPTP but was playing Hillary Clinton - she got a “special appearance” credit in the main title.

Would the George Wendt episode, directed by Francis Ford Coppola (another piece of work, as far as I'm concerned ... oh, do I have a story) count here?

I watched the Buscemi episode, and it was bad enough to make the current season look reasonably decent by comparison. Why Hurt was in that sketch was a mystery for the ages.

On a tangent:

Best I can figure, the Venn diagram of those who have appeared on both SNL and Doctor Who is three – John Hurt (1998/2013), John Cleese (1997/1979), and Sir Ian McKellen (2002/2012 voice-over). Anybody else I’m missing?

Now that I’m checking host lists - The week before Carey Mulligan: Daniel Kaluuya was in one of Tennant’s 2009 specials.

I was about to suggest that Simon Pegg belongs on this list, but surprisingly, he's never hosted SNL.  (Missed opportunity, if you ask me.)

Not a host but a musical guest, Kylie Minogue was on SNL in 2002 and was the companion in the 2007 festive special ("Voyage of the Damned").
Felicity Jones - hosted SNL in 2017; appeared in 2008's "The Unicorn & The Wasp"
