NBC just went to The Voice at 7:20 PT. Costas said that Belichick was late coming out of the loser's lockeroom, and they could not wait because they had to go to The Voice. But my DVR indicated that The Voice was supposed to start at 7:30 - so what was the rush?

NBC did a great job covering this game. I did not watch the first 4 hours of the pregame, but the last 2 hours were not horrible, and Costas had a great interview with Brady that really set up the game as it played out. His interview with Madonna was actually not too bad either, all things considered.

And, the best technical innovation in the coverage of the NFL in the last 15 years has got to be the pre-loaded graphic numbering the defenders when there are too many players on the field, instead of that horrible previous attempt to have the analyst circle them with his magic pen.

Great game, great outcome, very good coverage  - only feel bad I did not get to see the Patriots crying over their loss.

I had too much of a headache to wait for that part. I wonder if this
means kid-brother or Our Friend The Nurse get me another G-Men item
for my b-day (about a month).

NBC/Philly tends to letterbox most if not all network primetime, even
in SD, at least here on Service Electric, but didn't do that for the
SB. I'm leaving them a message to axe why.

All week the listings sites had Voice at 10... 10:20 would have been
afterwards...

No buzz on the obscene gesture in the halftime by Madge costar M.I.A.?

IIRC, "The Voice" was originally scheduled to start at 10pm E, but at some point NBC must have pushed a schedule change to listings providers, because both my TiVo and the GF's Xfinitiy DVR had the 10:30 start time.  They may have been banking on overtime or the availability of losing-team interviews to fill that 1/2 hour.

DVR issues aside, I'm grateful that NBC didn't decide to vamp for the extra 12 minutes.  One of my biggest gripes with FOX (as well as cable news stations) is their propensity to repeat information everyone knows (and to show the same replays over and over again) just to fill time.  In general, I found NBC's presentation of the Super Bowl to be clean & professional, without the abundance of crowd shots at inappropriate times and/or football playing robots.

Personally, I don't know which was more pathetic; M.I.A.'s thinking
the gesture would be "outrageous," or the clutched pearls over "the
children" seeing something they do to each other every day.

And "The Voice?" Who cares?

I do. Usually I don't watch reality shows or talent searches. I sat
through a few seasons of American Idol but they played too much into
embarrassing poor candidates in the audition stage. Having never
watched the first season (and generally not watching non sports prime
time television in general) the show's gimmicks seem intriguing to
this newbie.

I want to see quality and not cringe worthy performances. They only
showed one completely rejected performance, as it seemed that the
producers passed him along based on effort and motivation rather than
talent (Daniel Rosa midway). The teams being 12 instead of eight like
last season (I read the Wikipedia article to catch up during
commercial) seem to be excessive. I don't see the audience connecting
with 48 people, as 32 is already a lot with each contestant singing
for 60 to 90 seconds at best. I also don't know how much of the
"mentoring" they will show or how cliched it will be. The first
episode was mostly filler free and only had one cliffhanger. Idol had
too much filler and too many fake cliffhangers. I'll give this show a
chance but once I fall off the wagon I doubt I'll come back.

I agree with you about NBC's production, which is consistent with their quality all season, head and shoulders above both Fox and CBS. I did not need 12 more minutes of filler, but I did so much want to see an interview with the losing coach. It felt like Belichick manipulated his way out of having to face the music. His eventual post game interview was him being his usual asshole self, but I think it would have been harder to get away with (or the assholitry would have been even more obvious) had he been interviewed individually by NBC.

And I am quite certain that, at least by Sunday at 3:00 (PT) "The Voice" was scheduled to start at 7:30, and the post-game was scheduled to go up to 7:30, so I am still not sure what happened there. I did record The Voice, so I guess it missed the first 10 minutes (I won't lose too much sleep over that). I already deleted the Super Bowl itself, so I don't have the first 10 minutes of The Voice at the end of the game.

I like M.I.A., much more than Madonna. I did not really notice the obscene finger gesture - I saw it, but it did not really register as anything remarkable. I did think I heard her say an obscenity, but then just assumed my old ears were playing tricks on my.

My personal tastes are such that I would rather have gotten the finger from Janet Jackson, and seen M.I.A.'s nipples. But you can't always get what you want...

They should have kicked over the spillover to NBC Sports Network. Did
they do that?

There were reports of a spoken, tho not heard, S-bomb. I heard "shhh"
at the end of one line.

YACS.

I had put my TiVo request for the Super Bowl last weekend, padding an extra
half-hour at the end to make it a 4-hour recording. (Odd, though, that the
add-on wasn't adjusted once "The Voice" was pushed back.)

IIRC, what my DVR had was (all times central)
5:00-8:30 Super Bowl XLIV
8:30-9:30 Postgame
9:30-10:30 The Voice
10:30-11:05 News
11:05-12:05 Late Night

Mine was probably something similar (meaning a separate listing for the post-game show for the 6:30-7:30 slot, as opposed to the game itself carrying to 7:30).

Still, it seems odd that a scheduled program would begin earlier than it was listed to begin. That is a little like a plane leaving the gate 10 minutes before its scheduled departure.

I meant to add that as late as just before NBC threw to "The Voice",
their website was saying that it would start on the hour (i.e., 20
minutes before it did.) Not having an interview with Bill B may have
caused them to throw a little early, but it's starting to feel like
they didn't actually have a scheduled start time and they just figured
they would wrap things up when there was nothing else to cover.

I can tell you that, for a Super Bowl, that game sure seemed to go by
fast. When I got the ping that the game had ended, I did a double take
at the clock. IIRC, that game took three hours of real time. Most SBs
tend to go closer to the 3 1/2 or 4 hour mark, which is probably why
they first moved the start time back, then realized they really didn't
have much more to talk about.

As an aside: There's been much talk about whether Mr Belichick is a
non-conformist genius who dislikes the way the sport has morphed in
the past 10 years or just a curmudgeonly asshole who likes pissing
people off to no end. I believe the decision to stall to the point of
running out the clock will give both sides ammunition.

Either way, I hope the NFL fines the hoody off him.

I'm still a firm believer in not turning the game on until kickoff.
When "not horrible" is the best possible outcome, the pregame's not
worth sitting through.

That probably has more to do with being able to devote one person to
numbering players than pre-loading.

Did Leno say that last (Monday) night? That may be the best joke I have ever seen attributed to him. Good one.

Yes, Monday's monologue.
