The JFK era FCC chief will remain most noted for his 1961 speech where he
called television a "vast wasteland," although the accomplishments he
preferred to be noted for included the laws requiring all US television
sets to include UHF channels and the laws that set up satellite
communication, which, among other things, turned cable TV from a way to get
distant TV signals to a transmission system that could compete with
over-the-air television--after the FCC, he was a major figure in the
establishment of public broadcasting in the US, and was still rightly
critical of television's failings, especially in how it covers the news:

The expected letters to showrunners, even those that are also WGA,
expecting them to report to work for their other duties, went out from
D!sney, HBO/Max, and CBS...

PGage, May 2nd, in part:

As expected, WGA went on strike at 1 minute after Midnight this morning.
Could be weeks, but probably months, as most studios will not mind saving
on productions costs for three months or so.
PGage <pga...@gmail.com>: May 06 05:14PM -0700

This is a good example of why regular people hate corporations and their
minions. One might think capitalism would incentivize them to act in their
own self-interest, but it doesn’t. What is best for HBO and Disney is to
tell their Show Runners to stand as much as possible with their writing
staffs during the strike, keep cohesion and morale good, and come back as a
solid team when the Strike is over. There are ways to get them to do legit
non-Union work, and the corporation ps would benefit from giving the
benefit of the doubt in gray areas to the Union. But capitalism
incentivizes shitty behavior, not self-interested behavior. Corporations
typically assume that the more shitty and punitive they are to workers, the
more workers will be afraid to stand up to them in the future. They would
rather weaken current creative teams to increase their leverage down the
road, and will act that way even when past experience shows it does not
really increase leverage as much as it increases cynicism and lack of
commitment by workers.

I am at an age when I find myself awake a couple of times during the night.
On my way back from my first trip to the bathroom I remembered the
coronation and turned on the TV and caught the most official bits live
before drifting off to sleep.

We have not had a coronation if a British monarch in my lifetime, and they
used key elements that date back more than 1000 years, (when I woke up
later I saw the impressive “Three Cheers” by an aggregation of British
military said to the largest anywhere in more than 70 years) so, yes, this
is a newsworthy event. But it does not have to be a propaganda event, which
is what most of it feels like. I won’t say there are no positive
contributions of the British monarchy, but it is also an embodiment of
ideas like elitism, imperialism and colonialism which are inconsistent with
the values and moral commitments of many in the modern world. I would like
to se at least half the time spent covering the perpetuation of this
institution reflecting that.

In a local news app I used to use they would put stories about the royals
in the entertainment tab. That’s how I think of them now.

Mark Jeffries <spotl...@gmail.com>: May 06 09:59AM -0700

They claim that the video obtained by Media Matters that included Tucker
Carlson's infamous "that's not how white men fight" comment was proprietary
IP and demanding that they pull the videos. MMFA's response from chief
Angelo Carusone: “Reporting on newsworthy leaked material is a cornerstone
of journalism. For Fox to argue otherwise is absurd and further dispels any
pretense that they’re a news organization...Perhaps if I tell them that the
footage came from a combination of WikiLeaks and Hunter Biden’s laptop, it
will alleviate their concerns.":

Tom Wolper <two...@gmail.com>: May 06 02:25PM -0400

It wasn’t that video. At the Media Matters site they have a description of
the leaked videos. There are 4 articles about their contents. Which makes
this C and D letter weird, or at least intended for some other legal
proceeding down the road.

C and D letters have two targets: either some small entity who blindly
swiped IP and doesn’t have representation or an organization which deals
all the time with first amendment issues and has legal representation. MMFA
doesn’t need to broadcast the videos, they can publish a description of
their content and hold the videos for proof of their veracity. Fox can’t
suppress the descriptions and they know it. So the C and D letter has to be
about something else.

It was a mercy killing.

After Leslie Jordan's death I decided to watch the next episode because I
was a fan of his work. I couldn't even make it halfway through the episode.
It was horrifically bad. A bunch of talented actors, but not one line was
even remotely funny.

It's called "grinding," and fans of the Netflix fantasy series (what else?)
"Shadow and Bone" are repeatedly binging the entire second season night
after night to try to game the viewing numbers and get the Service to renew
their favorite show for a third season, defeating what they believe is a
tendency of "two and done" at Netflix, unless it's a show like "Stranger
Things":

There really is a cat cafe down the street from where I live here in Chicago--it was around before "Call Me Kat."

I should mention that in the superior British original "Miranda," the place Miranda Hart worked at was a joke shop inherited from her uncle.  If you haven't seen it yet, it's running in the U.S. on Tubi and FIlmRise and Hart has the presence and comic timing that Bialik wishes she had.

Maybe it was my allergies to cats that kept me away from this show.

I sure will not ever be spending any time in a real cat cafe.  Ahh-choo!
