I remember his "Television" series on PBS, and recall his appearances
on many sitcoms and shows. I was a little young to remember his news
broadcasts or documentaries.

And Mr. Newman delivered newscasts during David Letterman's NBC
morning show in 1980. Despite the awkwardness of doing newscasts with
a studio audience watching (although near the end I believe he was
moved back to the newsroom), he and Dave always seemed to get along
well.

I only saw Letterman's morning show once, toward the end of its run.
After the news update (which Newman did from the newsroom), Letterman
showed off a prop Edwin Newman lunchbox - a child's metal lunchbox
emblazoned with Newman's name and face.

I remember reading about one episode early in the run, when the news
segments were still being done in front of a live audience. This was
during the Iranian hostage crisis. Newman opened his news segment by
announcing that Ayatollah Khomeni had died; there was shocked silence
from the audience, and then Newman smiled and said, "Just kidding."

NBC Nightly News included the beginning of this very clip -- grainy
and all -- tonight when honoring Newman's career with the network.
Based on the "Day 332" Iran Hostage Crisis status, this clip is from
Wednesday, October 1, 1980.

Always liked Newman, but in looking at the related videos, I was
surprised to remember that there was a time when networks would
include a national news update during primetime.
