AT&T SportsNet and Root Sports Removed from DISH TV

  •  DISH proposes new model that is fair to both customers and station owners

ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Sept. 30, 2021 – AT&T SportsNet and Root Sports Regional Sports Networks (RSNs) were removed from DISH TV today. With this removal, DISH TV customers will no longer have access to AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (ATTRM), AT&T SportsNet Pittsburgh (ATTPT) and Root Sports Northwest (RTNW).

“The current RSN model is fundamentally broken,” said Brian Neylon, group president, DISH TV. “This model requires nearly all customers to pay for RSNs when only a small percentage of customers actually watch them.”

AT&T SportsNet and Root Sports RSNs are demanding rates that would be passed on to nearly every customer, whether they watch RSNs or not. This inequitable model has become antiquated due to the rise of a la carte viewing options and specialized streaming services.

“Our proposal to offer sports fans access to RSNs is simple, and provides choice and value to all of our customers,” added Neylon. “It would allow DISH TV customers to choose to subscribe to the RSN channels they want — such as the regional AT&T SportsNet and Root Sports networks — on an a la carte basis, similar to premium subscription channels. With this updated RSN model, no customer would be forced to pay for content they don’t watch, and the RSNs would determine the price customers would pay for their channels.”

DISH made this consumer-friendly proposal to AT&T SportsNet and Root Sports, but they refused it. They instead chose to continue demanding rates that are unreasonable to pass on to our customers. DISH remains open to working with the RSNs to offer sports content in a way that provides choice and value to all customers.

This is the same press release every provider uses whenever they have a channel dispute. "GleepGlorp made this consumer-friendly proposal to JubJubTV, but they refused it."

This is going to cause much wailing and gnashing of teeth in and around Seattle. The Mariners, who own ROOT Sports NW, are on the cusp of making the playoffs for the first time in 20 years, with their final series of the year starting tonight. If I were Dish Customer Service, I might not answer calls from the 206 area code....

It’s also not going to bode well for hockey fans in the American Northwest as Root NW is the home of the first-year Kraken.

Earlier this summer, ROOT NW also scooped up the rights to the Portland Trail Blazers from NBC Sports Northwest, causing the latter network's demise (they went off the air yesterday). So I'd say Dish should also avoid calls from the 503 area code, too.

While the Mariners' partnership rolls on, they don't... they lose while Boston, NY and Toronto all win on the final reg-season day; the Jays are also ousted due to a head-to-head deficit against the Yanks... Bombers headin' to the Fens Tuesday (10/5)...    B
