Did any of you see the John Wayne movie where he played a German freighter captain in WWII? How about when Wayne played Ghengis Khan? Or when Sean Connery played a Russian? Or a Spaniard? Yeah, as in those instances, Michael Douglas makes no attempt whatsoever to sound unlike himself in his portrayal of Benjamin Franklin. I suppose it is better than if he attempted an accent, but it is distracting.
I know in these enlightened times, television and films are produced for global audiences, but at the end of a long day, not everybody wants to read subtitles while people speak in foreign languages. I actually enjoyed the first episode, but I don’t know that the story was made better by forcing audiences to hear Michael Douglas do that to the French language.
