My fishing buddy and I went out to Lake Panasoffkee (Lake Pan) this past Sunday morning (12/19/21). I don't know if it was because of the full moon but it was a very strange morning. Overview of the morning: 40 bass to the boat in the first two hours and 2 bass to the boat in the last three hours. Keep reading for more details.
We left for the lake before the sun was up but the full moon was prominent in the sky!

We were on the water fishing at 7AM. I started out with a topwater, Rapala Skitter V, (5 1/4" Silver). My fishing partner started out with a jerkbait, Rapala Shadow Rap Shad Deep (3 1/2" Halloween). We were catching one or missing one on almost every cast for the first two hours. Of course we both found ourselves out of the action a few times with major backlashes when we tried to reach those big fish blowups just out of a comfortable casting range! It was so crazy that I started trying other lures just to see if I could find a monster bass. I caught fish on everything I tried with the exception of speed worms! Baits that worked included the largest whopper plopper (model 130, 5" silver), a 1/2 silver rattle trap, Rapala Rap-V Blade in gold, and even an old jointed minnow I had in an old tackle box I had in high school (with new hooks of course). At almost 9AM on the dot, the fish quit biting. The fish were still occasionally showing themselves around us but we could not buy a bite. We went to three other favorite spots and nothing. After 2 1/2 hours of nothing, we did some blind casting in some new areas. We did pick up two small bass doing that but we called it a day at noon.
We found that fishing grass lines and isolated grass patches worked the best. One lure modification that seemed to really make a difference was adding a red hook with white feathers on the back of our jerkbaits and crankbaits. I have attached a PDF file that gives some contour information for those that are not familiar with Lake Pan.
The largest bass was under 4 lbs. so we didn't take any bass photos. I have attached a couple of photos of the wild shiners available at the Pana Vista Lodge. Those shiners ranged from 5" to over 12" in size! We did not fish with shiners but someone at the last club meeting asked about where you could get wild shiners. The Pana Vista Lodge has them!
