PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION
RBK speaks to TVDC in an Alphabet Soup Zoom Meeting
Assembly member Rebecca Bauer-Kahan, RBK, spoke to the TriValley Democratic Club about her legislative agenda in the Assembly. Watch her on YOUTUBE. Her expansive agenda includes; fire safety, equity, covid recovery, and many others as well as how to propose or support bills. She spoke extensively about AB 988 which would create a 988 hotline to call when there is a mental health crisis situation, causing mental health crisis teams to be involved in the response. Read AB 988 here. See her full legislative platform here,.
40 minutes into the Assembly members presentation (see the video) she mentioned an APP that legislators have on their phones (not publicly available), if they inquire about pending legislation they not only see the proposal but they see a list of those of constituents who either called their legislator's office weighing in or weighed in via the legislator's website contact page (these links):
Also at the March 15 meeting TVDC voted to support three pending pieces of state legislation SB 271, AB 1400 and SB 90 & AB1416 (same bill).
Read SB 271 here - Sheriff Democracy and Diversity Act, allows any registered voter to run for sheriff — reverting back to the longstanding eligibility requirement in place from 1850 until 1989. Currently, only law enforcement officers (people with Peace Officer Standards and Training [POST] certificates) are eligible to run for sheriff. Because only a tiny pool of people are eligible to run, sheriffs are effectively insulated from political accountability and are only accountable to the law enforcement officers who are authorized to challenge their reelection. Most California Sheriffs run unopposed and do not appear on the ballot, automatically winning in the primary, below the radar.
Read AB1400 here - Guaranteed Health Care for All. Existing federal law, the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), requires each state to establish an American Health Benefit Exchange to facilitate the purchase of qualified health benefit plans by qualified individuals and qualified small employers. The bill defines the exchange.
Read SB 90 here and Read AB 1416 here (same bills) - The Ballot Disclose Act will require that ballots at the polls & mail-in ballots will state in the descriptions of statewide ballot measures the names of the three proponent and three opponent organizations of the measure. This information is already in the voter pamphlet and would appear on the ballot also. A great majority of those polled said that the names of those organizations would help them make better voting decisions.
Senator Glazer is Chair of the Senate Elections Committee which may bring the Ballot Measure Disclose Act SB 90 to the Senate floor. He has not taken a position on the measure yet, please contact him to have an impact.
