Existential threat to democracy
The Republican recall of California’s Democratic Governor could result in a newly elected Republican governor replacing California’s senior Senator, thereby giving the Republicans a majority in the US Senate again, leaving the country’s fate in the hands of a Republican Senate Majority Leader.
An authoritarian oriented Republican Senate Majority leader would work to stifle the President’s foreign policy agenda of making democracies work worldwide and domestically. A Republican Senate Majority would undermine Biden’s foreign policy initiatives, try to kill Obamacare ACA again, would encourage voter suppression, deter Covid recovery efforts, stop criminal justice reform, rollback environmental regulation reform and resume the nightmare of the last four years.
A proposed plan for preventing the recall of the governor
Over the course of 80 days, CADEM staff implemented an all vote-by-mail ADEMs Election, the first of its kind. During the 57-day registration window, 169,770 voters and 2,716 candidates signed up. This was a 300% increase from the last ADEMs Elections in 2019. CADEM contracted with PDI, Scantron, and BaughmanMerrill to execute the election. The final number of ballots submitted were 60,998. During the election, CADEM staff responded to 9,500 emails and answered over 400 calls, assisting candidates and voters.
The proposed plan is to mobilize those participating in the ADEM 2020 election, by asking active Democrats to tell voters why defeating the recall is so critical. Voters have to be made aware of the threat not just to Gavin Mewsome, put to all Californians no matter what their priorities and in a larger sense to all Americans who value democracy and oppose authoritarian government. The plan entails first mobilizing those most likely to get involved. In involvement order:
-
ADEMs elected, appointed by elected public officials and elected by county central committees. ~3500
-
Central Committee members ~1000
-
All party caucus and Democratic Club members ~ tens of thousand
-
ADEM 2020 candidates that were not elected ~ several thousand
-
California Democrats who voted for ADEM candidates ~61,000
-
California Democrats who asked for a ballot but did not vote for ADEM 2020 candidates ~110,000
-
Friends and neighbors of the above groups
Democratic Voters 9,691,855 46.3%
Republican Voters 5,018,332 24.0%
No Party Preference 5,028,910 24.0%
Other 1,182,416 5.7%
What are the ASKs? (no particular order)
-
Understand and be able to explain what the ramification of the recall could be
-
Vote in opposition to the recall
-
Convince others to vote in opposition and join the campaign in opposition
-
Join a Democratic club
-
Speak to your organization(s) about the ramification of the recall
The California Democratic Party has lists in digital form that can easily be distributed to the county central committees and they in turn could distribute the list to charted Democratic clubs. Club members and ADEMs would start the process of recruiting less active Democrats. The PDI database could be used to streamline/organize the campaign.
Key ideas
-
This is not just a recall of a governor, it is an attack aimed at control of the senate and blocking Biden’s agenda. Democracy is under attack.
-
The list of those asking for ADEM ballots includes highly qualified Democrats who took the time to ask for ballots, they are the easiest to convince voters and most easily mobilized
-
The CDP has lists of those voting in ADEM elections and those who requested ballots, ADEMs, caucus members, chartered Democratic Club members. This campaign is an opportunity to recruit members for Democratic clubs and not wait until three months before the 2022 election to mobilize.

Contact the CDP and ask that they implement this plan.
