Hello TVA

On April 18th from 10-4pm Western Science Center will be holding their annual Inland Empire Solar Festival.

We have been invited the last two years where John and I set up some telescopes and a few light solar scopes for Venus and solar daytime viewing.

There is also a star party afterwards by Hemet Ryan airport if I recall correctly.

We are sharing a tent with the WCA astronomy club so there likely won’t be much room.

I plan on going, and John may as well. I am sending out this email to see if one or two others would like to join us.

We are not understaffed, actually quite the opposite, but if you’d like to join us for some daytime viewing feel welcome, otherwise just rest up for the star party later that night.

Let me know if you’re interested! We have 3 slots open, any more would be too much for room constraints.

Thank you!

-Tytan

I can provide the solar displays we use... but it'd be nice to have solar telescope(s) available!!! If not, a live DSO view on a laptop / pad would be nice...

I’ll have the 12 inch dobsonian on Venus/Mercury and the 8 inch untracked dobsonian on the Sun with a solar filter.

John has an arrangement of solar projection scopes as well.

I live in Hemet and am very interested. I can bring a double stacked 30mm tracking solar scope and can do observations with a push to 12 dob or tracked C14 also (this time I won’t get lost!!) what time are the Western Science Center daytime and nighttime volunteer slots?

Hi Anthony,

I’ll have a 12 inch motorized dobsonian already there. Your contributions are appreciated but we have space constraints so another dob and a C14 would be overkill for our area. Setup begins at 9am and the event starts around 10.

The nighttime viewing is unrelated to the solar event and I suggest emailing Kathleen for those details.

WCA is the high school astronomy club and since we’re sharing a tent we’ll have to be mindful of space as well as the other attendees.

Your 30mm solar scope should be a great addition to the scopes we plan on having there. You can always operate the 8 inch with the solar filter as well.

Oops, I meant a 50mm double stacked solar scope. I also misread the announcement, I guess the evening star party is at Ryan airport? I’m probably not going be able to make that one, but I can definitely make the solar viewing time slot 10am-4pm.  In addition to viewing, I can bring a camera for it to show the students how to set up and take their own images with the telescope, and they’ll be able to get the photos they’ve taken with it emailed to themselves. That would make a interesting educational opportunity for them!

Thanks for organizing this, Titan!

-Anthony

No. The club had two Coronado scopes and we lost track of who was borrowing them.

Dave Phelps had one PST and the iOptron in his possession when he passed away… I’ve asked several times if Hap was ever contacted about them with no clear response
I last saw the second PST at a Santa Rosa Plateau Event several years ago… I had followed up with the family of Doug Lyons to see if he had taken it by chance but they did not find it….

Correction: setup for the IESF is from 8:30-9:45. I will forward the email they just sent out to those attending.

We have a request for Star Party on the night of the Solar event. He wants to have it at Henley Park. Should we do it or not do that all in one day? Please weigh in on this one ASAP.

The solar event will be easy and done by 4. Due to size limitations we only have an opening for one more person to join us.

It will only be Anthony and I, assuming nobody else joins in.

If you plan on going to the star party later that night feel no pressure to join us earlier at WSC, we have it all covered.

Count me in for the one at night too. I’ll have the large telescope in the car ready anyways after WSC.

Kathleen, is that at Mary Henley Park in Hemet? Just curious if it’s the Hemet Parks department requesting the star party? It would be awesome if they could authorize one up at Simpson Park  - the night sky is darker and offers a 360° sky view up there. They also have good facilities up there as well, but unfortunately, it’s usually closes at 7pm.  Anyway, I can only do the daytime presentation that day.
