Hello

When I write the following commands, tuxtrans says "apertium is not installed, so not uninstalled". But, apertium is in fact installed in tuxtrans.

sudo apt-get remove apertium

sudo apt-get remove --auto-remove apertium

sudo apt-get purge apertium

sudo apt-get purge --auto-remove apertium

I am asking this because I could not find this information in its documentation. Also, tuxtrans says "apertium is not installed".

How can we be sure this software is not taking our translated segments and transfer them to its database somewhere in web? We are not developers we can not dig into their codes to investigate this.

As long as their software is in our computers or as long as we use their software, they have an access to our computers in some way or another. At least, they will know our IP numbers when we connect their database even if there is not any strings attached to their software specifically for this reason.

I am telling these, because, I am fully aware of the attempts and efforts of some cat tool companies, translation agencies and some developers to grab our TMs (especially free and while we are unaware of it). Naturally, our TMs are very important for their survival and for their business success.

I am telling these as a person whose computers are constantly being hacked by some online translation agencies/platforms in daily basis. Even while in the middle of their own translation project. As long as we are logged into these online translation agencies, they have access to our computers, because, at least, they can see our IP numbers in their system. They can even watch us through web cams of our laptops with the help of their toolbars or softwares we are required to install. And they are actually doing this.

This is not only a very important security and privacy threat but this is also a very important threat for the future of our profession. I wanted to take your attention to this subject.

For these reasons, I don't want to have any machine translation related software in my computer.

How can we uninstall apertium and all other machine translation related software/codes from Tuxtrans? This is the only thing I want to change in Tuxtrans.

Thank you

Hi,

the only thing that is installed in tuxtrans is apertium offline machine
translation, that is the OmegaT plugin to enable offline apertium mt
within OmegaT. If you enter the translation menu item apertium the
single language combinations of apertium are started with Java, but they
are the same offline components that are installed in
/opt/omegat/apertium where we have a jar file for each language combo.
The language combination files as well as the apertium plugin which is
also a jar file installed in the omegat plugins directory are not
installed by apt-get but only copied into the respective directories
within /opt/omegat. This explains why sudo apt-get remove apertium
cannot change anything.

tuxtrans does not make any internet connection by itself. Apertium is
activated within omegat under Options | Machine translate where you will
find two options: apertium (which connects to the apertium server in
Spain and gives you online mt), and apertium (offline) (which starts the
omegat plugin and gives you offline mt).
Even if you activate apertium offline there is no internet connection
whatever, you may verify this disconnecting your pc from the internet
and it will still work within Omegat whereas the first option apertium
will not.
So there is nothing to worry about if you only use apertium offline.

To remove apertium offline completely enter a file manager with
administrator rights (e.g. ALT F2 and "gksu tuxcmd") and delete the
directory /opt/omegat/apertium as well as the file
/opt/omegat/plugins/apertium-omegat.jar.

You are right, security and privacy issues are always very important and
this is also one of the main reasons for the existence of a FLOSS
desktop system like tuxtrans. I also do not like the new wave of online
translation memory and translation management systems.

best
Peter

PS: I got an account on mediafire and will upload a iso file divided
into 4 pieces tomorrow.

 Hi Peter,

thank you so much for your kind and helpful reply.

Yesterday, I succesfully uploaded the iso files to my mediafire account directly from your links.

After that, I tried to download them to my computer by using your links again, but this is time I used "Internet Download Manager" and it worked. Previously, I tried with "flashget" and it did not work, although I remember it worked before.

Regarding fake online translation agencies, I have a lot to tell, but I will tell when the right time comes and I will not only tell, I will do something about them.

Thank you again
