We understand that you wanted to manage your volume on your movie while watching, allow us to help you with that.
Movies and television shows can have a wide range of sounds, but using the volume modes on your compatible Roku streaming device lets you enjoy a more even listening experience. Switch to automatic volume leveling to hear more consistent audio levels across various types of entertainment, making it less jarring when a commercial comes on or while switching channels. Use Night Mode to reduce the volume level for louder scenes and boost it for quieter ones, letting you watch late-night TV without disturbing others.

All the best,
New issue just in the past 2 days; haven't seen anyone post this, so hope I'm not the only one. Media with AAC audio plays at *extremely* low volume. Typically when playing back most media through emby or netflix, my Yamaha AVR volume is at about -30db. In the past couple days, I now need to set volume for AAC files at about +10db just to have it audible, and with lots of hiss FWIW. (This 40db louder -- I have never, ever had to set my volume this high, and for typical playback, this would probably blow out my speakers.)
Some quick tests do seem to isolate this to AAC. DD/AC3 files play back at their typical volumes through emby, as does Netflix. But testing 3x AAC files all produces the extremely low volume issue. Server indicates Direct Play. (And FWIW, testing w/ Emby Theater on a Windows PC does not have the issue.)
Given that 3.2.70 server was just released in the past 10 days and things had worked fine before that, I'm guessing it's some sort of bad library update/regression or some weird change to the Shield profile, but hoping the experts can confirm and fix.
Issue is confirmed to only happen on Emby client while playing back AAC files on Shield. (e.g; Emby Theater on test Win10 box doesn't have the audio issue w/ same AAC files, Emby on Shield plays back DD/DTS files fine, and Netflix / AMZ Prime videos on Shield playback fine.)
I second this issue, I never looked into the type of videos it was happening to but I noticed it wasn't all videos, i'll check the vid next time I have one with this issue to. I had to crank my sound system almost to max to be able to hear some though.
Finally had time to collect the requested data last night, but wanted to isolate behavior further. Turns out, it's a Shield issue, not an Emby issue. (I put an AAC file on a flash drive and played locally through native Shield video app -- same volume issue.)
@@MEB , I found an unexpected fix; hopefully it'll work for you as well. When the issue first happened, I futzed with a few of the Shield audio settings even though I'd never changed them since initial setup and they had been working fine. But no joy. Went back to these settings last night after confirming that it's not an Emby issue. What seemed to un-bork things was enabling the setting to send all audio output at a constant level. This disabled CEC/IR functionality on the Shield. I went back and re-enabled CEC, and bam -- problem solved. I could tell this fixed immediately because Shield navigation sounds immediately got much louder. (I changed several things that didn't seem to help, but can't be sure if they had any impact; so if the above doesn't fix, try toggling any/all audio settings to whatever they aren't currently set to and see if that helps.)
Have you ever watched Netflix and noticed the dialogue is too quiet, but the sound effects and music are too loud? This is a problem that many people complain about, and---depending on your TV and home theater setup---it could have a simple fix.
The audio you hear from a movie or TV show is comprised of multiple recordings that have been "mixed" together. There are channels for the actor's dialogue, sound effects, background music, and more. During post-production, the volume level and other audio specifications of the various channels are fine-tuned and mixed for the final product. The goal is to create a balanced audio experience where whispered dialogue, explosions, and everything in between are all balanced perfectly so the viewer is never left wanting to hear key details or enjoy the experience. That's easy to do when you're mixing for a theater setup with specific speakers and known variables. Things can get messy when audio is mixed for multiple environments.
That's one common reason why the dialogue on Netflix, and other streaming services for that matter, is too quiet. The way audio is mixed for different types of media doesn't always translate well to a home setup. Movies and TV shows are usually mixed for surround sound systems, with multiple speakers that can create a more immersive sound experience. The music may be configured to play louder through the speakers behind you, while the dialogue comes through more prominently on the front-facing speakers.
For some reason, Netflix on many platforms, especially smart TVs, defaults to playing audio for 5.1 surround sound. That means it's intended for a surround sound system with five speakers and one subwoofer. This forces your setup to, however well or however terribly, downsample the 5.1 audio to 2.0 audio if you don't have a surround sound system. So if you don't have surround sound, you should change a key setting. Thankfully, it's very easy to do.
I thought this meant my longstanding issues had been resolved. But sadly not. We have tried watching several programmes on Netflix and we are back to the same issue. Dolby Vison/Atmos is the worst and is so loud its actually unplayable unless you use nightmode. UHD also same problem for me. So, is this a problem with Netflix, if so has anyone else had the issue and how to resolve it?
I am so frustrated as I thought the recent Trueplay had resolved my issues but as I say the Action/Music noises are way too overpowered on Netflix. Its as thought the Trueplay hasn't worked. I do have a Sony Bravia which has a Netflix calibration setting which I use but I assume that is for Picture quality and shouldn't effect the sound?
Unfortunately, the audio mix on certain content will have a higher dynamic range which results in dialogue being drowned out by loud music or sound effects. This is the reality of the home theater experience. The purpose of Night Sound and Speech Enhancement is to deal with this problem when it arises from time to time. I keep Night Sound on 80% of the time and I think everything I watch still sounds great.
Ok, so my settings were already on compressed. I have now chosen standard and then nigjtmode on the sonos. This seems OK at the moment. I will see how it works across netflix, prime and Now. Still doesn't feel right that to make it usable I need to use nightmode
My quest 2 volume sounds lower than it used to be,even at max and I aint using speakers,I'm using headphones it most likely is a software issue caused by an update or something,I aint the only one facing this issue.Anyone knows any fix?
Hey Panzerfaust44, thanks for bringing his to our attention. We totally understand your concern with the volume being too quiet, even when the headsets volume control is maxed out. We would first like you to perform a factory reset so your headset may act as if it were new. out of the box. To perform a factory reset using the headset:
Hey,I managed to fix it without doing the factory reset,Instead of maxing out the volume from the options i used the volume buttons Instead and the audio was how it was supposed to be,still thanks for the help.
I am having the same issue where my headset audio is too low or sounds very quieter than normal. When I tried to factory reset the issue continued even when I tried to lower and raise the volume with the volume buttons and in the settings menu.

This happened to me as well but I found a fix (without doing a factory reset). This usually happens when you connect a headset or earbuds. 1. Go to bluetooth and connect the earbuds or headphones that you were using. 2. Put the volume to max. 3. Reset the headset. This worked for me, and now my volume is normal.
