Iwas one of the best students in my French classes. By the time I graduated high school, I considered myself a fluent French speaker. And for someone living in a foreign country, with no need to interact with French people or exist in a purely Francophone environment, I might as well have been.
Some people go into learning a foreign language with a focus on one particular thing. Maybe they want to become fluent as quickly as possible. Maybe they want to know every single word they possibly can. Maybe they want to master grammar above all, or have an impeccable accent.
When those moments happen to me, I try to think of all the progress I have made. I focus on all of the times that I interact with French people and have absolutely no problem understanding or being understood. Sometimes I even savor particular little victories, like the time I made a clever pun when talking to one of my neighbors.
One of mine was understanding French actor Romain Duris. Duris is known for his bold and versatile acting and sort of bad-boy indie persona. He also has a very garbled way of speaking, at least to me. While I can understand most other French actors with little or no effort, Romain Duris remained a challenge for me for years.

When the Center had to close in the middle of March, two weeks before my winter session was to end, I was worried I would not be able to keep up with my French. But more than anything, I realized I would miss connecting with my fellow classmates every Tuesday and Thursday. Without missing a beat, the Center supported my teacher to resume our class online.
If you are not sure of your level of French and if you have never taken a class with us before, we ask that you please take our placement test. This will help us to best recommend the class and level that fits your knowledge of French.

After some time, your brain will finally give the roomy a proper bedroom. You start speaking French without translation (or asking the permission to your first language). All the periods above are fun parts of the learning journey.
Taking all the above factors into consideration seriously, after three months of private French classes once or twice a week, you should feel comfortable. After six months of regular classes and self studies, you can reach an intermediate level. It will take you up to a year to be fluent and reach an advanced level. People with latin native languages might reach the next level faster than others, again, if they study and they are regular. With that said, if the quality of teaching is poor or your own (or self) studies is non-existent, the results will be appreciated later (or possibly never).
Over the last year, I've been fascinated by AI and its potential to change the way we learn languages. And I've spent a significant amount of time exploring tools that allow me to engage in French conversation practice with AI.
The sheer number of available options can be daunting for learners. In this article, I'll share my top 3 picks for AI French conversation practice, providing you with an assessment of each tool's pros and cons.
Langua is an all-encompassing AI platform designed for learners who are dedicated to mastering French conversation skills while also having the option to engage in listening, reading, and vocabulary exercises.
When selecting an AI French learning app, consider factors such as the quality of the voice recognition and speech output, the variety of conversation topics and exercises available, and the level of personalization and adaptation to your learning needs. Take advantage of free trials or basic plans to see for yourself whether the platform is well designed and works for you.
While AI-powered tools can be incredibly valuable for French learners, they are most effective when used in conjunction with other learning methods. Combine AI conversation practice with other activities like working with a tutor and listening to podcast to ensure a well-rounded learning experience. Use AI to target specific skills, such as speaking fluency or vocabulary acquisition, while also seeking opportunities for real-world language use and feedback from native speakers.
AI-powered language learning tools offer several key benefits, such as the ability to practice speaking and listening skills at your own pace, receive immediate feedback on grammar and pronunciation, and access a wide range of learning materials tailored to your interests and proficiency level. Platforms like Langua and TalkPal provide an engaging and interactive learning experience that can help you build confidence and fluency in French.
Despite the impressive advancements in AI tech, it's essential to recognize that these tools have several limitations compared to human tutors. AI may not always detect subtle nuances or be able to provide detailed explanations for complex grammar concepts. Additionally, AI-generated conversations may sometimes feel less natural or contextually relevant than those with a real French tutor. It's crucial to view AI as a complementary tool rather than a complete replacement for traditional learning methods. And of course, language is about connecting, so don't miss out on speaking with real people!
I hope that this article has educated you on the possibilities of working with artificial intelligence to enhance your learning experience. If you're feeling motivated to try learning to speak French with AI, I recommend you start by trying Langua. It's freemium and also has a free trial of the Pro version available. My team and I decided to create Langua because generic AI tools like ChatGPT were not truly meeting the needs of language learners.
