Accordingto the poet Homer, the Greek god Apollo sometimes took the guise of Paean, physician to the gods. The earliest musical paeans were hymns of thanksgiving and praise that were dedicated to Apollo. They were sung at events ranging from boisterous festivals to public funerals, and they were the traditional marching songs of armies heading into battle. Over time, the word became generalized, and it is now used for any kind of tribute.

Good people gather to proclaim new love with joyous ringing!

Rejoice, dear friends, in temple pure: How can we keep from singing?

Our love declared and hearts aligned, Great hope is surely springing!

May we tread well and live with love. How can we keep from singing?

When Chenowith was married in October 2018, he wanted to sing "My Life Flows on in Endless Song" (Singing the Living Tradition, #108) but didn't find all verses fitting for a wedding...so he wrote these two new verses to be sung after the hymn's original first verse, written by Robert Lowry in 1869.

We yearn to know Your perfect plan

of love beyond compare;

and as we seek eternal truth,

Lord, keep us in Your care.

To grow each day in faith and hope,

Lord, nurture us, we pray;

then we shall lend the helping hand

that guides someone today.

The fellowship of Christian love

renews our soul indeed;

and hands extended in Your name

bring strength to those in need.

May we reflect the oneness, Lord,

designed in heav'n above;

then help us to be used by You

as channels of Your love.

Updated Format! Beginning in November of 2016, we changed the way we formatted our PowerPoint files. The font is larger and the staff lines are bolder, making the songs easier to read from a greater distance, including smaller screens/monitors in the rear of the sanctuary.

For Jewish people, Hanukkah is considered to be more of a minor holiday and therefore, a bit more lighthearted. With that in mind, we created a fun song that celebrates that tradition. "Joyous Hanukkah" is a terrific mix of major and minor (a great opportunity to discuss and listen to the difference between major and minor keys, by the way), but the really neat twist is that as the song is sung, the tempo gets faster and faster. It would be very fun to have a group of singers dance the Horah, which could be as basic as joining hands in a circle and skipping clockwise during the minor section and counterclockwise during the major section. This could be as simple or elaborate as you like, but keep in mind that as the song progresses, the tempo will increase. So, please be careful!

Referring to the lyrics of the song, be sure to explain to your singers that "shalom" is a term of greeting or farewell and can mean "peace," "be well," "be safe," etc. And "Nes gadol haya sham" means "A great miracle happened there." It also refers to the Hebrew letters n, g, h, and s, that are found on the sides of a dreidel.

I love singing, especially in church. Whenever I sing a hymn or praise song I remember other times I have sung that song. I think about the first time I sang the song. Music touches my mind and heart in ways nothing else does.

Cadence, also known as Ultra Bard, specializes in buffs and debuffs much like the standard Bard subclass and stems from either Spy or Assassin. However, it differs in its Meter. It is advised to be in a house while using this class, otherwise, all song will target houseless players nearby, for both buff songs and debuff songs.
