Running Photoshop on x64 is no problem. Photoshop is still a 32bit app so it will only be able to use 3 gigs of memory, so this will only be a marginal improvement over your 32Bit windows. CS4 will be 64bit and allow for more memory usage.

You could see a little greater performance if you install a little more RAM, 6GB. This way windows would be able to use 1GB, photoshop 3GB and you would have 2GB left over for plugins and other apps. With 4GB you are right at the border of a performance advantage.

Hi, I've run Photoshop on XP 64 with 8GB and it runs much better than with XP 32 and 4GB. I don't see any reason to stop at 6GB unless that's all your Motherboard can support. Ram is so cheap these days. The extra ram can be used by other programs for multi-tasking.

You say you are working with large images, this will really make a difference. People say anymore is a waste which is probably true for most, but for those doing superhi-rez panos or if you like to work with lots of layers in 16-bit, there are ways to utilize it.

Hi, I'd never run the test before. but I tried it out. My processors are xeon x5420s clocked at 2.5 so my score of 35 seconds is respectable , but certainly not record breaking. I kept an eye on the scratch drive which went to 3.9 GB so it never touched the disk. Looking at the CPU, meter it never got higher than 50% and most of the time sat between 13% and 33% so most of the filters and operations in that test aren't effectively multi-threaded. The Gaussian blur at the end took the longest time, I really hope they thread that one in CS4 because i find it's used alot.
