Folder Lock comes with a powerful file shredder and a cloud-based backup solution as well. The demo is free, while the full-version is $39.95. Knowing how to lock a folder in Windows costs a bit of money, but the functionality and customization makes it worth it. Now you know how to password protect a folder.

You can also use disk-encryption software for more robust security than just a password. These tools block even the most advanced brute-force attacks, which try to crack passwords and encryption keys using different combinations.

This kind of full-encryption software adds an extra layer of security by incorporating both password and encryption protection to your files, meaning that the actual contents of files and folders are encrypted and protected by much stronger and more complex decryption keys.

With support for AES, Serpent, and TwoFish keys, VeraCrypt is a free, cross-platform data security tool that can encrypt files very effectively. VeraCrypt comes with full disk encryption but can encrypt at the volume (folder) level as well. Users can decide whether they want specific folders encrypted or entire systems.

Password protection is like locking something in a safe, like a highly sensitive document. Encryption is like rearranging all the letters in a document so that they can only be placed back in the correct order if you have a special decoder key.

You should password protect files because if you share your computer with others, someone might accidentally delete or modify an important file, or even share a private folder. You might even make the critical error yourself, accidentally sending sensitive information to the wrong person.

Sharing a computer is not a problem if you add a password to your most sensitive files. Entering a password every time you access that file may slow you down a bit, but the added security is worth it.

And you can always use Windows to encrypt an entire folder, as described above. Knowing how to password protect a folder and how to encrypt your files is key to making sure your content is locked up tight.

Consider what might happen if you lost your master password, if your encryption software got corrupted, or if the files themselves got lost. Backing up your data regularly and using a password manager can help ensure that never happens. You can even clone your entire hard drive to an external storage device.

Before the "WINDOWS" screen at starting press F8 to enter the screen to safe mode.run your computer in safe mode and then start folder lock it will run and don't ask for password and then unlock your files hope this help.

Bigger Problem : I had locked many folders with this software when it was working fine.

But now I can't access those folders anymore, they're still locked but software doesn't show these folders in its "locked folders list".

How do I unlock them?

The software was working fine for few months - I was able to lock and unlock things in my computer during that period. But all of a sudden the software Folder Lock just got reset somehow.

I had the same problem. I was not able to retrieve my locked files but uninstall of folder lock without password is easily done by using for example speed commander (select folder lock from program files via speed commander and delete) Simple as that.(no password required) Can also be done with other file finding software as well.

The only way I know is to change the name of the parent directory in which the locked folder exists for example Pictures is the locked folder then change C:/Anything/Pictures to C:/Anything else/Pictures

Open Computer Management by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Computer Management. Using password protection to lock files and folders increases your digital privacy and security, because it means you need to enter a password to open your documents. When you password lock your files, no one can access them without knowing the password, which helps protect your personal information and data.

Password protection means that only those who know the password can access the information. Encryption is a more secure form of protection, because data is scrambled using an encryption algorithm and can only be unscrambled and accessed with a decryption key.

Unlike password protection, encryption scrambles the contents of individual files so that the data is unreadable. Encryption is like randomly shuffling all the letters of a document and making it so that only someone with a decryption key can unscramble the data and read the document.

But encryption and password protection are only as strong as the passwords used to secure their contents. So, whichever method you choose, be sure to create unique, hard-to-crack passwords and use two factor authentication.

A "locked folder" can also mean a folder with files currently in use, but that's not the same idea as a folder you'd lock intentionally for privacy reasons. See How to Move, Delete, and Rename Locked Files for more on how those files work.

Sorry I haven't replied back to any of your comments guys. This is the

first time I've logged into this site in a long time. This instructable was something I made when I was in 8th grade. Yes I know my grammar is terrible and my spelling is even worse. This was just something I done for fun. It was never meant to be "secure or encrypted." Also this was only meant to work in Windows XP. I see that some of you have found ways to make it work in other OS and I think that's great. Most of your problems are probably related to using windows vista or windows 7. If you forgot your password just make another locker.bat and delete the old one. Just because you delete the locker.bat or locker.exe for those who converted it, doesn't mean you delete the folder where your files are stored. I will try to come back more often and respond to your comments and questions.

This problem crops up every now and then at work. Our build machine can have it's files accessed via a normal windows file share. If someone browses a folder remotely on the machine, and leaves the window open overnight, then the build fails (as it has done now). The explorer window left opened points at one of the sub folders in the source tree. The build deletes the source, and does a clean checkout before building. The delete is failing.

Right now, I'd like to get the build to work. I'm logged in from home, and I'd rather not reboot the build machine. I'm unable to get hold of the person whose machine is looking and the files, and I can't remotely reboot their machine.

Older versions had a "terminator" option in the context menu of the process. Right click on the offending process --> Miscellaneous --> Terminator --> Select termination techniques. Note that some are possibly dangerous and may have unintended consequences.
