Only older versions of files will be compressed when this option is enabled, the latest version of all files will always be uncompressed to improve performance. The compression option is Archive Server specific, so if there are multiple replicated Archive Servers it will need to be enabled on each one to have the files be compressed on that server.
One thing to keep in mind though, starting with SOLIDWORKS 2015, .sldprt .sldasm and .slddrw files are already internally compressed when they are saved (there is about a 50-80% decrease in file sizes from the previous years), so compressing these files will not really save much space (about 2%). However any files last saved in SOLIDWORKS 2014 or older, or any non SOLIDWORKS files, will benefit from enabling compression.
Step 4: In the Open dialog, browse to the SOLIDWORKS PDM installation files and go to the SWPDMClient\support\polices folder. There select the file PDMWorks Enterprise.adm and click Open.
You should only run the compression schedule ONCE per day, running it too frequently would result in performance degradation on the Archive Server. Schedule the Compression Schedule to run AFTER the scheduled backup of the Archive Files. For instance use 0 2 * to run the compression at 2:00 AM (server time) every day.
Disclaimer : Before taking any steps to relocate, remove or compress data please ensure that all files have been checked in by the users, backups have been taken of both the database and archives. In the event of a relocation have all users log off or go into Offline Mode before attempting the move.
Note : There is no way to uncompress the archive once it has been compressed. Turning off the option only prevents new files from being compressed and will not change any currently compressed files. It is also worth noting that file structure changes to SOLIDWORKS file have largely rendered this process ineffective compared to when it was introduced. If other file formats are used, they may still compress at a high ratio and save considerable space.
Set the radio button to Enabled and specify a schedule. Compression will compress any files in the archive that are not the latest based on this. It is recommended that this process not be too frequent to avoid taxing the server during peak hours. All vaults on this archive are going to be compressed. To make the compression vault specific, you must use the manual method.
The primary function for Cold Storage is to help spread out files across different drives and directories. To do this the configuration needs to be set for the particular folders that this should apply to. We will also be setting the schedule and end path. This path must be accessible by the archive server.
Notes: While this process does move data in some cases it can actually create additional data and take up more space than before. Files that go into the vault are assessed on whether or not the data in the file has changed or whether meta-data in the database has changed. If the file has not changed, the archive does its best to minimize the footprint of each file and will reference the same file for different versions. When cold storage processes a file for a version that does not explicitly have a unique file, it will copy that file and place it into a compressed package. This in turn has now created a second copy of a file that the archive had already determined not to be unique. In this way, we have made the issue of space worse.
Files that have been cold stored require additional permissions to access. If a user does not have permissions, any attempts to get an older version of the file the latest version will be used and a warning will be displayed.
When attempting to use the rollback function it is impossible to roll back to a point beyond the last file that has not been put into Cold Storage. Cold Stored files are compressed and moved, there is no way to reverse this change.
Another function of the Cold Storage schema is to delete older versions after a defined version number. Setting this up is similar to that of the relocation schema, but is different in that we do not need to set a path. Change the radio button to indicate that the schema is for deletion and specify the number of versions to keep, then whether versions marked as revisions will be saved. The process will run on the set schedule and remove any version of a file beyond the specified version number. All deletes are permanent and cannot be reversed. This is noted in the history and versions previous to the deleted versions cannot be rolled back to similar to the relocation schema.
Bryce has been using SOLIDWORKS since 2008 in multiple roles across multiple industries from industrial vacuum to RV frame design. He spent many of those years spent as a PDM administrator, implementing 3 PDM vaults along the way. He earned his CSWP in 2019, followed by his CSWE in 2013. When you open the MechAnalyzer softwares, first you need to choose the correct mechanism. You can choose Slider-crank mechanism in the navigation area (bottom left corner). There are 3 panels you need to know:
Plug everything into the software Mechanalyzer above and then click draw to get the results like above. Because velocity and acceleration are positive correlates, we just need to focus which ratio produces the largest velocity at this particular position.
According to US patent, the forces needed to compress the can is around 5 to 20 pounds, which is 22 Newtons to 88 Newtons. Thus, we just need to produce the force in this range. For purpose of manufacturing, we should produces the slider with mass larger than 5kg.
As you can see, the acceleration here is presented in mm/s^2, so to convert to m/s^2 you just need to divide by 1000. Here, the ratio is fixed, angular velocity is fixed, only the angle BAC changed to 45 degree. If you looks carefully at the tiktok video in step 1, you see the time the slider starts to compress the can was around 45 degree, so we choose acceleration at that time.
Because the type of motion you choose here involves rotary motion. That's why the most suitable engine or motor is the DC motor. In order for the motor to be able to moves the system, it must produces enough torque. The formula to calculate the torque needed is provided above.
As you can see the Cyclone I design have a hole in the bottom, so when the slider compressed the can, it upper surfaces actually cover the hole of the cyclone so no cans can fall down. When it pulls up, the hole of the cyclone is opened, so the can will be able to fall down. It kinds of like an improvement to let the can falls down automatically.
And after a lot of hardworks, finally you just finish design the Compressed Can Machine. Theoretically, if you decide to build it, you will definitely change the design a lot more, because there always a big gap between design and reality. By default, all older versions in a file archive are stored uncompressed in their original format on the archive server. To save space, you can enable compression on all file versions older than the most recent version. The most recent version is always stored uncompressed for optimal performance during transfers between client and server.
To enable archive server compression on the server, we recommend using the SOLIDWORKS PDM administrative policy. If you have multiple vaults however and do not want to apply compression to them all, you can instead add the registry key that activates the compression manually for each vault.
Vault compression can be configured per vault if it is not configured per Group Policy. The process is similar to how we manually defined the vault cleaner schedule in the earlier blog in that we must create and set a registry key. Create a string value registry key named compression schedule located at:
SolidWorks is a 3D CAD (computer-aided design) design and modelling program which is used to create 3D models for mechanical design. Using SolidWorks, engineers can quickly design and experiment with product ideas. Once a model is created in SolidWorks, they can make detailed drawings that can be used to produce the product.
Download the compressed file for the latest version, (older versions will expire), from downloads.cc.dtu.dk and extract it in a location you can find it. From Version 2017 the file is compressed using 7z compression so you may need an external program to uncompress it first - 7-zip. You cannot install the program without first extracting the 7z contents.
Windows 7 and 8 can block files that it thinks may be malicious. This same security feature can cause the SolidWorks installation manager to not work properly. To fix the issue, you will need to unblock the installation files.
Animations are certainly NOT my specialty when it comes to SolidWorks. I have created a few animations over the years but I have never really been completely satisfied with the quality of the videos I have produced. Is it because of shortcomings in the software? No, it is mainly my lack of time to learn all the ins and outs of creating a good animation.
One of the jobs that we are working on right now includes the creation of some animations to be placed into a PowerPoint presentation. With this our CAD department is finally digging into the animation portion of SolidWorks and have already put out some GREAT animations. I am also fortunate in that I have some great Blogger friends in Matt and Rob that I can bounce a few questions off of.
