All,
I have been doing some experimenting in the background getting ready
for the next edition of "woodturning with SketchUp".
I finally managed to render a segmented model.
Here is the theory:
-Create a staved assembly, this will model the segments of the final
vessel.
-Create a vessel, this will define the outline of the completed
vessel.
-Intersect (Add) the staved assembly and the vessel together and
delete anything outside the vessel's boundaries, leaving a segmented
vessel.
Here is the practice:
1. I created a staved vessel. (see Segmented Model_staves.jpg in the
file directory on this group)
[stave's are easy to create just create a cross sectional view of the
stave with the correct angles and dimensions for the number of stave's
you want and the size (diameter and length) of the vessel. Then use
the push pull tool to make it the length you want. Make it a
component. Select the move command and copy (hold ctrl) and move each
stave into place until you have the final assembly, just like you
would in a glue up. Hint: when make the stave a component, anything you
do to one will be changed on all the copies you make of it.]
2. Create a vessel that represents the shape of the final vessel on
the virtual lathe. Make sure the diameter is the same or smaller than
the smallest diameter of the assembled staved vessel. Group the
rendered vessel. (see Segmented Model Example.jpg in the files
directory)
4. Move the staved assembly and the vessel onto the same center axis
oriented in a manner that will allow you to slide the vessel inside
the staved assembly.
5. Explode (ungroup) both the vessel and staved assembly.Select both
the vessel and the staved assembly all at the same time (insure that
nothing else in the model is selected) and then right click and select
"intersect selected".
6. At this point the staved assembly and the vessel should be one
integrated (intersected) object.
7. Delete all the lines of the staved assembly that are outside of the
vessel leaving only the vessel but this time with segments.
I put the model in the files directory if you want to play with it.
