Ken,
They look great.
Did everything work as you expected?

Can I post some of these pictures on my site?

I'd also appreciate it if you could leave a link to the book on your site as well as vote your satisfaction below the book on the order page.

Donnie,

Everything worked as you stated in the book, however, it does take quite a while to get a suitable finish on the antler because it is so porous. I still prefer to use the Mylands Sanding Sealer, and then buff the pen out with the Beal Buffing wheels and wax. What brand of CA do you use? Have you noticed a difference in the properties of the different brands of CA? I’m using some CA I have left over from my last model RC plane project.

Yes, you can post the pictures on your site. I’ll send you pictures of more of my projects as I finish them. Right now, I am finishing a walnut quilt ladder for a customer of my wife’s quilting business.

I’ll see if I can figure out how to leave a link to the book on my blog site.

Ken

Ken,
After trying almost every finish out there the CA seems the most
durable and capable of the best shine.
More importantly it wears the best with oily hands and the everyday
wear of pen use.
You took on one of the most challenging ..... antler pens, and did a
nice job.
As you say antler is very porous and requires many coats and then
extra polishing.
Did you use and go through all the polishing compounds in the book?
Additionally I notice that one of the pens has details like beads.
This makes it even more of a challenge since the CA wants to pool and
sometimes does not coat well on vertical surfaces then when you polish
it tends to be more dull than the other areas.
I have never been able to get the same deep and brilliant shine with
sealers, lacquers and such as with CA. The reason I thing this is true
is that most surface finished don't get that hard and when subjected
to polishing regimes the coating actually is removed. I have been
meaning to try pre-catalyzed lacquer but never gotten the time to set
up all the spray stuff for one pen.

I have used most of the CA brands even the little tubes you get in the
grocery store. They seem to all work as well for me, but I mostly use
the cheaper stuff that is in Woodcraft. I use the NCF accelerator.

To post my book use this link. Your blog should have a "link" tool
(looks like a figure 8 rope) and enter this address linked to text
"Mastering the CA finish".
