The flyer looks great. You can include the Turkish Students Association as one of the sponsors.

I am sending this email to the TSA list server as well.

Dear Fran,

Thanks for working on this and to Karyn for putting it together.

The other co-sponsor  is the Department of political science. If we want all the cosponsors, maybe list Department of….

I have yet hear directly from the TSA, so I don't think we can finalize without their direct input. If we do not hear from them I think we can list TSA representatives as speakers but do not list as cosponsor.

The flyer the TSA is distributing… that Charter Morris sent to us.. lists Türkiye but I figure we can use Turkey unless the TSA makes a request otherwise.

I don’t think we can add a QR without consultation.

I have to teach, I can check around 3:30 pm.

I have attached a professional version of the earlier flyer, thanks to our graphics designer Karyn Bowen.  The attached version is for your reference and is still a draft.

  • We will change the nomenclature from Türkiye to Turkey, for clarity.

  • We will add Capstone International Center and The Aronov Chair for Judaic Studies as co-sponsors.

  • We will add the QR code with a link to the event info or to the list of suggested donation sites.

Do we anticipate any other modifications today, before I request that Karyn make these final changes?

  • To the planner who is making the decision, please send the QR code to me as soon as possible!

Flyer looks very good!

My .02 on nomenclature is ‘Turkey’ – it’s what the major news sites still use, rightly or wrongly, and one wants to be understood.

Please feel free to add me to the organizers if you’d like -- The Aronov Chair for Judaic Studies.   Cannot hurt to show a broad front.

Re postering, I can cover Presidents Hall/humanities quad when I make my teaching rounds. I’m sure PJ (one of the PSC admins) can help with ten Hoor – so long as Joe S. has no objection.

Best,

Daniel

Attached is a draft of the flyer for Thursday's event. There is a spot for a QR code, if we can have that available by Monday afternoon.  I'm also waiting for guidance on using Turkey or Türkiye.  (The latter is diplomatically correct but perhaps confusing.)

Thanks,

Thank you all.

International Student & Scholar Services in the Capstone International Center is happy to help support and promote in any way we can.

We appreciate the inclusion of the Turkish Students Association in the event.

The TSA have shared the attached graphic with us, working with Bridge to Turkey.  They plan to table at the Student Center this coming week and will be sharing the graphic out as a student organization.

Our office will be working on another graphic that includes QR codes for this and a few other other recognized NGOs on the ground.

Waleed:

Thank you for bringing us all together to learn about this disaster and its aftermath, to offer support to those among us who are impacted, and to learn how best to channel our financial support.

Please consider the Office of Global and Community Engagement among the sponsors of this event.  We can contribute to the costs of food at the event, and assist in developing the flyer.  I will begin creating the flyer on Sunday, will run it by my communications specialist on Monday, and have it ready for distribution on Monday afternoon.  If a member of the TSA feels they should take the lead on this, I am happy to assist that person.

Please let me know how else I can contribute.  I have several work-study students whose help I can enlist this week.

Best,

Fran

Subject: Event planning: "The Turkey-Syria Earthquake and its Humanitarian Impacts"

Dear all,

I am writing with an update about the planning of an event addressing Turkey-Syria Earthquake  with an outline of next steps, for which I could use your assistance. If willing, please read this update and let me know your feedback and confirm willingness to assist. (I will only send further updates for those interested to continue to assist with organization. Once we have an formal announce that will be distributed widely.)

The event will take place in UA Library’s Yellowhammer (room 2019) on Thursday, February 16, 2023 from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. I am currently calling it, "The Turkey-Syria Earthquake and its Humanitarian Impacts,” but welcome suggestions if this does not work.

I am willing to co-moderate with Cheryl Toman (if she is interested) and we can introduce the event. We can ask those on the program to speak for around 5 to 10 minutes each and then allow attendees to speak and/or ask questions. Speakers could offer background about recent events, talk about the impact of events on themselves and family, they could highlight NGOs to donate to.

So far, I have three confirmed speakers:

Dr. Ibrahim Çemen, Professor of Geology, who can briefly discuss the geology of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

M. Zeki Güngördü, Turkish Language Trainer, Critical Languages Center (CLC), who can speak about the experience of his immediate family in the earthquake zone.

Dr. Noor Ghazal Aswad, Assistant Professor, Department of Communication Studies. She will join us via Zoom and can speak about the experience of family and friends in the north of Syria. She might also mention Syrian’s NGOs to offer donations too.

I have invited the Turkish Students Association to have a representative (or two) speak to represent the student community on campus and they can highlight the list of places to donate that they have prepared. I am waiting to hear directly from them, but I have been told they are interested to participate.

So far, I think I can list as the organizers...
-The Chambers Professorship in Middle Eastern Studies
-Department of Modern Languages and Classics
-Office of Global and Community Engagement
-Department of Communication Studies
-And I expect...the Turkish Students Association.

Please let me know if this list needs to be edited. Once we prepare a flyer we can reach out to more organizations and programs to help publicize and invite to attend.

NEXT STEPS

1. MOST URGENT..  Working with one (or more) volunteers from the  Turkish Students Association, I would like a committee to prepare and distribute a flyer (maybe in print and in electronic form). I know Fran Oneal and Daniel Levine have some experience with this. The first task will be to prepare text, maybe and/or photo. See the draft info at the bottom of this email.  The flyer could include donation information. Ideally we should have this out by the end of the day Monday.

2. Working with one (or more) volunteers from the  Turkish Students Association, we also need volunteers to work with a food committee which will be arranging pizza and drinks for Thursday. Jessy Ohl (and maybe communication grad students?, maybe Daniel Levine as well?) could maybe lead this effort. (You could charge orders to my p-card if needed).  If needed they can be in touch with the library events coordinator, Alyssa Freeman <alyssa....@ua.edu>.

Please let me know how this all sounds and if you wish to participate further or have other advice.

In the meantime, you are welcome to forward the existing information about the event to others as we prepare a flyer.

In case you need to contact me directly, my mobile/WhatsApp is +1 (205) 331-9847
