Londra Üniversitesi/SOAS öğretim üyesi Prof. Dr. Benjamin Fortna'nın yeni kitabı "Learning to Read in the Late Ottoman Empire and the Early Turkish Republic" çıkmıştır. Türk Tarihçiler Bilgi Paylaşım Platformu Üyelerinin ilgisine saygıyla sunulur.
Learning to Read tells the story of learning to read against the background of the transition from Ottoman Empire to Turkish Republic. It begins with the premise that the history of learning to read and reading, remarkably understudied for this region given its importance, can tell us much about the arrival of the modern period in general and the Ottoman-to-Republican transformation in particular. Investigating by turns the messages imparted to young readers, the experience of mastering the basic mechanics of reading, the arrival of new types of reading materials, the role of illustration, the emergence of books and magazines as commodities and the ways in which literacy changed people's lives, this book provides a multifaceted approach to reading during a period of rapid change. It demonstrates the reading's crucial importance to the modern history of Turkey.

kitabın adını gen.libl.rus.ec ye yazıp PDF'ini oradan indirebilirsiniz. Fortna'nın Imperial classroom kitabı da var orada.

Soas'ta bulunduğum bu dönemde bir çok akademisyen gibi bana da katkıları olan Prof. Dr. Benjamin Fortna'nın, bir üyemizin belirttiği gibi aslında bir süre önce çıkmış olan bu kitabı gerçekten çok ilgi çekici. Kitabın Amerika versiyonu çıkıyor ve yeniden tanıtımları yapılıyor. Daha önce grupta çalışma tanıtılmadığı için duyurmayı uygun bulduk. Amazon gibi uluslararası satış sitelerinden temin etmek mümkün, ancak ulaşamazsanız bana bir mail atın sizin için temin etmeye çalışırım.
Grup üyelerimize yönelik olarak da şu hususu belirtmek isterim. Telif hakları ile ilgili kurallara uygun olmayan eserlerin pdf versiyonlarının paylaşıldığı bir site ilgili bir mail teknik bir hata sonucu yayınlanmıştır (anladığımız kadarıyla zaten ilgili çalışmanın pdf'si de o web sayfasından da kaldırılmış). Üyelerimizden bu tür web sayfalarını maillerine konu etmemelerini istirham ederiz.
