Hi,

I run the UltraVNC server on my Win10 machine and access it by using either the TurboVNC or the RealVNC client. On the above Win10 machine I use Cygwin for some few applications. I have a German keyboard.

When sitting in front of my PC I can enter, in a Cygwin Terminal / Xterminal, all special characters such as @,|,~,`,´ä,ö,ü etc. Note that first 5 ones need a combination of <AltGr with a letter, e.g. '@' is generated by pushing <AltGr and q together.

However, when accessing the machine via VNC the characters '@,|,~,´,` are not being displayed in the Cygwin terminal. Issuing the command 'ascii' shows a table with all these characters and their corresponding codes!

Is there any way of overcoming this problem?

Thanks, Dieter

If the problem also exists with the TurboVNC Server, or if the problem doesn't exist with the UltraVNC Viewer, then I can look into it as a potential compatibility bug.  Otherwise, there's nothing I can do about it.  Supporting such special characters requires special handling by both the viewer and the server.  My suspicion is that this is a limitation in the UltraVNC Server, which is out of our control.  If you can disprove that suspicion, i.e. if the UltraVNC Viewer works, then I can investigate what their viewer is doing to make it work.

Hi,

I now installed the UltraVNC-client on my Win10 machine. Connecting to UltraVNC-server running on another Win10 machine the problem persists. Using AnyDesk I do not have this problem. I neither had it with an older RealVNC server/client running on Win7. I have not tested the most recent RealVNC version! Is there any objection against AnyDesk?

best, Dieter

If there is an obvious compatibility issue between our viewer and a particular Windows VNC server, then I’m happy to fix it, but I have no ability to support software I don’t maintain, including the UltraVNC Server. Since we don’t officially support Windows servers with TurboVNC, I certainly recognize that there are better solutions for that. (I don’t have any specific knowledge of AnyDesk, though. If you like how it works, go for it.)
