Alas, poor Geoff, one is still too much if we are talking XXXX

BLOB problems: what are they? Is that when one consumes too much XXXX
one turns into a BLOB?

Happy coding!

Geoff,

Maybe it's your CD burner software???

Hi Germain... what was that? Oh me? I'm just killing time while I wait
for another burn.

Oh, another burn you ask? Dont worry - I always like to drive into town,
discover that the CD is corrupted, and then come back again and do the whole
thing over again... Burn number 7 underway.

What? Oh that - I raided their stationary cabinet and I've got about 20
blank CD's to play with now...

<bg> - drive door has opened and closed... data verification underway...
then into town again and see if it worked this time!!

Gee, I can hardly wait to see how the other 364 days of this year turn
out!!!

LOL!!!!

That make me really laugh!

Here we are still in the previous year... and will be "there" for about 5:30
hours.

Hope you get that working!

A laptop could be used too! I really don't trust media anymore. If I have to
install something, I bring my laptop with the info.

LOL!! A sense of humor!! I should have kept monitoring the NG instead of
cussing at the computer!!

I have to dash into town now and put the new system in... its 99.97% done -
the BLOB problem relates to setting a range, and editing records in that
range. If the edit has 3 important ingredients, then you will get a couple
of undesirable side-effects. The 3 conditions:

1 - the key fields are edited so that the record is taken out of the range
2 - the BLOB field is .clear'ed
3 - and optional, new data is stored into that BLOB field

If you do the first 2, then you will get, each and every time, an invalid
BLOB Nr. This is easily fixed by any number of fix utilities (even mine
<g>).

If you also have the 3rd condition, then you will write the entire record
over the top of another record (apparently at random) in the table. *IF*
you have even one index in the table (not necessarily the one the range is
imposed upon) then you will be "saved" the resulting corruption: an
'internal' key violation is raised and the changes discarded - without the
user being alerted. If not... well.... its been a long time since last
Friday.... <sigh>

Thankfully, Thorsten has come up with a quick fix for the problem. He'll be
working on a more elegant solution next week (hopefully!).

> Happy coding!

<vbg> - grrrrrrr... As soon as I get back, I'm going to bed!!!!

Regards,
Geoff.

You know, its a good thing humans have a sense of humour. I'm still trying
to burn the &^%%* CD!!! I've just gone thru 3 and now trying to get a 4th
one that passes the data verification!! Guess I just have a bunch of bad
CD's...

Mind you, I'd be *really* ticked off if I hadn't ticked the data verify
checkbox and I'd got into town and discovered I had a bad burn... I'm on my
last blank CD now...

Oh - there goes the drive - up to data verify again... Gosh if that fails I
guess I'll just pop down the road and have to buy another box... oh no...
its Jan 1 ... all the &^%&^ shops are closed... <vbg>...

Hi Geoff,

When it rains it may as well *really* rain - quite normal to get
floods after a drought (different to draught which after too many one
also gets a flood!)

Anyhow, I thought I'd try teach you a thing or two about sucking eggs

CD burning with old burners is quite a touchy thing. If something
interferes with your CPU cycles the buffer can run dry and you get
another coaster

I shut down everything I can - virus checker, Messenger, Outlook
Express, Explorer etc then if I get a bad burn I slow the burn speed
one notch - usually that works

Otherwise, get a new burner with built in buffer protection

Nero has a "interesting" user interface but seems to burn OK. CloneCD
also burns OK.

It may be faster FTP'ing the 590 Mb than burning!

Or take your trusty Laptop and connect to their network - & transfer
that way, or use LapLink

Good luck!

I now have 5 brand new tea and coffee coasters. They haven't even seen the
blue ink of the overhead projector pen!! I've got a new'ish 40x burner, but
dont normally close everything off (using Nero) - I did reboot the computer
(on my first return trip before the last burn) - maybe that had something to
do with it?

At least now I have a checklist for pre-burning!!!

You wanna know the funny thing: I didn't take the laptop in simply because
I'm tired, its hot, and I didn't want to lug the damn thing up and down 3
flights of stairs!!!!

Anyway, its all in there now. Found I'd forgotten to change the version
number on their system - but that's a job for 'email attachment'!! Crikey
its hot today!

OK, a quick cuppa and I'm having a snooze before it gets too hot to sleep!

Regards,
Geoff.

Yup. But I need one of those mountain mules to lug the damn thing up and
down that client's stairwell! But I've learnt my lesson - better one arm
longer than the other rather than the interesting drama that unfolded today!

Have a fun NY celebration - and dont mind Paul - drink heaps of XXXX and get

Hi David - thank you for your thoughts. And I only had one, yes one,
mid-strength beer (alas, not even a XXXX)!

Yup - I'm madly coding trying to overcome <g> some issues that originated as
corrupt BLOB's and get a system into place tomorrow morning which was
supposed to be there on Monday morning.

Enough of my woes - Happy New Year right back at you!!! <bg>!!! I'll
probably end up celebrating the New Year around the same time as yoU!!!

Well all the best for the New Year to all the members of this group!

After weeks of drought down here it seems we are trying to compete with the
northern hemisphere. In the last 3 days we have had 44 mm of rain - I just
can't believe it!
Further we have been staying at the beach [it is handy having a daughter who
lives by the sea - and decides to go away for a week after Christmas].
Earlier it was hot, hot, hot and dead still. When I left this morning it was
the sort of sea than knocks done "Brighton Piers"!

I am just about to start writing reports describing our software - while no
one else is home.

Again all the best to you

Heck, we've only had 40 mm in the last 3 days. And the wind last night tore
another branch off one of the redwood trees and it hit the roof with a
clatter at about midnight. I chopped it up this morning.

We're at right about half an average year's rainfall right now (measuring
July 1 to June 30) and about a third of the way through the rainy season.

I had to cut half a tree [fortunately not a big one] off an old caravan at
our place!
It is a tough old van and seems to have survived.

SA is known for its dry summers - but when it does rain in summer it can
really, really rain! This was fairly mild - good for the tank. [We live on
rainwater in the house.]

Ok, harking back to what Francois posted,

If you mix Guinness and Champagne you get a Black Velvet (and a head
explosion later).

What do you get when you mix XXXX and Champagne?
