call widget method

Hi,

I'm planning to write a widget that has server-side json-support which
is "generic" - there shouldn't be any controller methods involved
(unless one absolutely wants to...)

So - is there a way to immediately call a widget method somehow? I'm
under the impression I've seen such a thing - but I can't recall where.
