another "new web site preview"

In an attempt to improve the web site, I have another mock-up for you
to peruse [1]. Take into account there is some stuff missing, we need
to mention more about the screencasts and whatever, which I seem to
have omitted, but content can be shuffled, added and removed so
comments on the concept - please tell me it's not too influence by ror!
- I have NOT even touched this in internet explorer yet so any problems
there, please let me know and I will cry!
Thinking on the lines of consistent feel in toolbox too - the top bar
inspired by these shots [2] (thanks Ronald)

Swap the toolbox and examples blurbs, move the community activity to
the bottom. I think more could be done with the community activity
presentation, but I have no good ideas, so I'll just be happy.
Some weird stuff going on with the markup that is part of the column,
the images are in paragraph tags but the content is not. I was going
to complain about some text being 1.5 spaced while other text was 1.0
spaced, but that seems to be the source of the problem. :]

The layout is good, but how about shrinking everything by half? I'd
like not to scroll to see everything. That fading/changing link in
the middle is amazing: that's one of the things that will attract
people. The "megaframework" logo could be shrunk by 2/3 and still
make an impact. The main menu links would look better in sans-serif
font.
I'd also consider lining them up vertically; it looks like they're wrapping now.

Looks very good overall! The banner just below the navigation is too
wide (and maybe slightly overbearing in general), but I like the
overall look and the icons you've chosen.

pretty. The good news is your awesome fading feed display widget worked
perfectly and was centered properly. Bad news is that just about
everything else had problems. The menu along the top entirely
disappeared. The bar behind it displays, but no other graphics. The
megaframework logo came out just fine. The text underneath the RSS feed
display looks like it is left justified on the edge of the screen. All
of the blurbs underneath are aligned so that the left half of their
graphics are cut off by the side of the screen.
Now that you are done banging your head into the wall, it does look
awesome. I agree that some parts could be made smaller to get it to fit
onto one page, or at least make it closer to doing so. I would suggest
shrinking down the blurbs and putting them horizontally inline with
each other, or finding a fourth blurb and doing a 2x2. Either way the
python blurb should probably be last on the list, as it will be the
least interesting for most of the traffic.
Anyways, great concept, too bad it does not work in our favorite
brain-dead browser. I agree that the fading link effect will turn some
heads, and would recommend tossing in as many TurboGears Shiny
Bauble(TM) effects as you can while keeping it relatively subtle.

find a use for them.
I agree, seeing it at work today on a smaller screen, it does look a
little ... over powering, I will look to shrinking it all down some.

I do love internet explorer! I particularly like the fact that the menu
vanished entirely!
I will see what I can do with IE, I might have to invest in some kind
of virtual pc maybe ...

I have a copy of windows XP, just nothing left to install it on! I seen
a couple of cheap virtual pc types around so, I will take a look at the
viability of these, but I'm on intel mac so adds to the complecations!

Indeed, I completely agree. As much as I dislike windows and IE, I
always try to get my sites working in it. I have a windows box at work
which I remote desktop to, so I take a look first thing in the morning
each day :-)
Anyway, if anyone has time to look over the html/css and can input some
IE debugging this would help me a great deal.

I noticed that the "TurboGears Planet" Icon is shining,
it apear as "gears under the planet", looks like a pearl ring :)
The current is good and is it possible to improve it to look like
"gears around the planet"? (as "circle around saturn")

hmm there's an idea. the best thing is kind of on demand screenshots,
but that would be tricker I suppose. Karl says he's happy to work on it
once we finalise the most.

There is actually a service that will render screenshots on demand in
something like 40 browsers. I don't use it, but it hit digg two months
ago or so.

As long as you're not using IE no-nos (complex float stuff, fixed
positioning, etc), it's not that big of a deal to do the IE tweaks. I
find it necessary to have access to IE for testing, as I always forget
something.

was explaining to a client the other day that an element of there site
didn't look right because I hadn't tested it in IE fully. They didn't
seem to know there were other browsers, so I departed some w3c wisdom.

You little gem! I had seen this site some time ago, but I lost it.
Shame it takes so long, trouble I have is the need to tweak, refresh,
repeat until not broken. This is certainly going into del.icio.us :-)

Look I am by no means a fan of IE and I work in the website trade so you
know what that means, but let's be honest here, Microsoft virtually has
invented the web. Or more accurately, they invented the web we have
right here right now, not the W3C's standards utopia we all wish we had!
Like it or not, what IE says is what goes, and meanwhile we do our best
to promote more predictable browsers and hope to ride out the storm.
Hell if IE7 turns out to be as compliant as FF/Safari then I'll be just
as happy as if IE died a death altogether.

IE7, from all the reports I've heard, is quite solid in terms of CSS
support. It will not, unfortunately, have SVG support, which is a
disappointment. I also know that alex russell (dojo project lead) has
complained that the scripting system has not seen as much work and is
essentially IE6.
I get annoyed with IE on a regular basis, but it is nothing compared
to the that was NN4. I absolutely hated that browser.

I just wanted to point out that those guys let you access the machine and use it and they have lots of diferent configurations, it's a really nice deal for someone that may need it.
