OpenVPN isn't very informative about this error, but it is usually caused by invalid characters in the configuration file. They may be invisible characters. Sometimes this happens when using a configuration file that came from Windows.

The configuration file is short enough that the easiest way to fix it is to re-type it into TextEdit, in "Plain Text" mode. (Open TextEdit, then click "Format" and "Make Plain Text". If the "Format" menu has "Make Rich Text" instead, it is already in "Plain Text" mode.) Note -- don't copy/paste, because that will just put the bad character(s) into the new file. You have to actually retype all of it.

Notes:

1. You can probably set it to "verb 3", which is usually high enough to show what's wrong if it doesn't connect.
   
2. Be careful using up/down scripts -- you must set the configuration to NOT "Set Nameserver" or they won't be executed. And most people are better of using one of the other "Set nameserver" settings, which uses standard Tunnelblick scripts.

Its probably something really stupid that I have missed but I am not very experience with Macs as I usually work with Windows. Can any one point me in the right direction?

To clarify: In the VPN Details… window, you need to click the Settings tab and change "Set DNS/WINS" to "Do not set nameserver" if you want to use your up/down scripts.

If "Set DNS/WINS" is set to any other setting, standard Tunnelblick scripts will be used instead of your up/down scripts. As I said before, the default, "Set nameserver", works best for most people.

Thank you so much. I will try that out first thing on Monday morning. I had a quick little look, but I first have to figure out how to save a new config file created from scratch without it being forced to adopt the .txt file extension!

I will let you know how I get on :-)

That's easy. The TextEdit Save dialog has a checkbox to "Use .txt extension if none provided" -- just un-check that and use the .conf or .ovpn extension in the name you provide.
