Hi, I have several  issues with Tunnelblick, yesterday I face this error message “your /tmp folder is not secure” and when I tried to connect, it just rejects passphrase (I dont know if password and passphare are the same, tried password privided by IT and empty passphrase; neither worked), now after tried several workarounds (installing a newer version, tried to repair the tmp folder ownership and permission via terminal command https://tunnelblick.net/cSystemFolderNotSecure.html) I can't install the version  3.8.1_5400 (this is the version supported at my job) or latest anymore, it just say “The installation or repair took too long or failed”, I tried uninstalling it using Tunnelblick Uninstaller, but I get the same error when trying to reinstall.

Please note that I'm a new Mac user (I've been Windows user all my life) and my skills on Mac are very limited.

My OS and my mac:

MacOs Big Sur 11.6.1

Macbook Pro M1 2020

1. If the ownership and/or permissions on /tmp are wrong, they must be fixed before doing anything else. You say you tried to fix it; did it get fixed? Please post the output from

     ls -ld /tmp

2. Tunnelblick 3.8.1 is more than two years old and contains serious security vulnerabilities. You should use the latest version and keep it updated. Ask your IT department if they are recommending that you run software with known security vulnerabilities and which is no longer a supported version.

3. If Tunnelblick asks for a "passphrase" when connecting a configuration, it is asking for a series of characters that will unlock your private keys. If Tunnelblick asks for a username/passwword when connecting a configuration, it is asking for the username and password for the VPN; it merely passes them on to the VPN server to "prove" to the server that you are who you say you are. (To install Tunnelblick or some VPN configurations, or to make other security-sensitive changes to your VPN setup, Tunnelblick may have macOS ask you for a computer administrator username and password, but that should only happened after making changes.)

1. this is what I get from ownership and permissions on tmp folder:

2. They required at most 3.8.1 they stated that newer will not work, and ask me to not upgrade until it is confirm staging and production environments work ok with the newest versions, so im stuck on 3.8.1.

3. thats weird, I have not been provided with a passphrase, IT sent me a password, but that doesnt work as passphrase.

4. No, I've been provided with a DMG stored in our servers. Apparently our confluence docs, previously sent to Tunnelblick website, but now just redirect to a download on our servers, I suppose 3.8.1 is not available anymore on official website.

The ownership/permissions on /tmp look OK, but it is troubling that it happened at all. Who knows what other damage was done by whatever caused the /tmp problem?

If IT gave you a password, they should also have given you a username; the username and password are entered together. The "passphrase" is used to unlock the private key, which is part of the VPN configuration which was, I assume, provided by your IT department. You might want to get a new copy of it.

If the current version of Tunnelblick downloaded from the official Tunnelblick website won't install, try reinstalling macOS. Maybe that will repair whatever on your system has been damaged.

ownership/permission on this specific folder was the issue:

/private/tmp

just ran this command:

sudo chown root:wheel /private/tmp; sudo chmod 01777 /private/tmp

that fixed the issue that "the installation or repair took too long or failed" but still cannot connect to VPN, still rejects passphrase.

In the end IT sent me a third password, and this time works like a charm, first try.
