Spoiler alert: I've fixed the issue below while compiling this report and it might be useful to someone in the future...

It turns out the problem is macos and saving default HOME directory with trailing slash. If you remove that, everything works fine...

The solution: The proposed solution from the archive does not work,  however it does work with setting the HOME directory manually by using

sudo dscl . -change /Users/<username> NFSHomeDirectory /Users/<username> /Users/<username>

I've checked the source code, however I don't find the bug straight away, so I stopped looking for it...

Hey,

I am experiencing a weird issue with Status 173 from tunnelblick-helper. It started with migration from one macbook (intel, monterey) to new one (m1, monterey).

The problem is that when I try to connect to my VPN I get the gui request for securing the configuration, which returns  the following message "An error (status 173) ocurred while trying to check the security of the Jernej3fs configuration.".

The logs show this lines:
Jun 13 11:58:22  tunnelblickd[3388] <Debug>: approximateLastKnownReboot = 1655113025.797997; approximateMostRecentReboot = 1655113025.726177; difference = 0.071820
Jun 13 11:58:22  tunnelblickd[3388] <Debug>: This reboot time is approximately the same as the last reboot time; not first run after rebooting
Jun 13 11:58:22  tunnelblickd[3388] <Debug>: tunnelblickd invoked but not first run after reboot
Jun 13 11:58:22  tunnelblickd[3388] <Debug>: Started net.tunnelblick.tunnelblick.tunnelblickd
Jun 13 11:58:22  tunnelblickd[3388] <Info>: Created new temporary directory /var/folders/1_/fly7lgv15c7_qvkgc81klcc80000gn/T/net.tunnelblick.tunnelblickd-lkCCps
Jun 13 11:58:23  tunnelblickd[3388] <Info>: Removed temporary directory /private/var/folders/1_/fly7lgv15c7_qvkgc81klcc80000gn/T/net.tunnelblick.tunnelblickd-lkCCps
Jun 13 11:58:23  tunnelblickd[3388] <Notice>: Status = 173 from tunnelblick-helper command 'compareShadowCopy VPNConfig'
Jun 13 11:58:53  tunnelblickd[3388] <Debug>: Timed out; exiting

I  found a similar solution in the archives, however it did not solve my issues (https://groups.google.com/g/tunnelblick-discuss/c/qGwJCk7mj38).

When I've migrated, I have changed the home directory of a user, however I don't see how that is related. I have reinstalled (also with using Uninstaller app) Tunnelblick many  times without success.

Thanks for your report.

The problem (also described in the discussion you linked to) is that the "HOME" variable in the environment that macOS's launchd program creates for tunnelblickd does not match the result returned by NSHomeDirectory(), which is a macOS function to return the path to the home directory. So macOS is contradicting itself!
