Cannot install on Ventura 13.7.5 (22H527)

Tunnelblick notified an update available, so I've updated to last version, 8.0, but during installation I've got the message: "Tunnelblick will quit because a critical component has been disabled or is missing. ...  Please re-enable the component in System Settings >> General >> Login Items. ... ".

I've checked the system settings and the tunnelblick items are enabled. I've tried to download and install 8.0 from dmg, I've got the same. I've tried with beta 8.0beta01, the same. I've tried with old version 6.x, without success. I've tried to disable tunnelblick items in the Login items and re-enable them, no change. Now I always get the message and tunnelblick doesn't install.

How can resolve this?

Here are some things to try:

Reinstall 8.0 from the disk image (again, sorry). When you get the "Tunnelblick will quit…" message, click "OK", verify that the two Tunnelblick login items are enabled, and wait a couple of minutes. After waiting, try launching Tunnelblick by double-clicking it in a Finder window showing /Applications, or by searching for it with Command-space, launching it from a Dock icon, or whatever method you would usually use.

If you get the same message again, restart your computer, wait several minutes, and then try to launch Tunnelblick again.

If that doesn't work, restart your computer in Safe Mode, then restart it again normally, then after waiting, try to launch Tunnelblick again.

(The waiting is because sometimes macOS tells Tunnelblick (and System Settings) that the background items are enabled even though it hasn't yet enabled them because it is busy doing other things. Because of that, Tunnelblick independently tests that the background item is enabled by trying to communicate with it, and, if that fails, the error message you've seen is displayed.)

I'm having the same issue after installing 8.0. Also on Ventura 13.7.5. The Allow in the Background items are enabled. Rebooting and waiting did not help. I can't try Safe Mode because it's a work machine. After installing 7.0 I get the same issue now (..critical component has been disabled or is missing...).

  1. If it is a "work machine", does that mean you cannot log into an administrator account on the computer, only a standard account? You can go to System Settings >> Users & Groups to see a list of users and whether they are "Admin" or "Standard" users.
  2. Please post the output from copy/pasting the following into /Applications/Utilities/Terminal:
     ls -l /Library/LaunchDaemons/net.tunnelblick.tunnelblick.tunnelblickd.plist

After reinstalling version 7.0 I kept the same issue, but after a extra reboot 7.0 was working again. After that I installed 8.0 again and it is working now. I have no idea what went wrong.

After 2 restart, now installation works well. Mistery…
