Hi -

I tried to install Tunnelblick, but now even though it's on my menu bar, no drop down menu appears if I click on it.  However, if I try to delete it from the system, my Mac tells me I can't because it's in use.  But then if I go to Force Quit, it does not come up as one of the active programs......

How do I get rid of it, and then how to do I install it properly (and is it worth it!!!)?  I was very happy with my PPTP VPN connections but my ISP seems to have changed their settings and now I can't get them to work so I thought I'd try TunnelBlick.

Thanks,
Auntie Prawn

Hmmm. Very odd situation. What version of OS X are you using?

If you get a "spinning beachball" when you click the Tunnelblick icon, that usually means that Tunnelblick has a window open and is waiting for your response. Minimize or close the windows of all other applications (and in all Spaces) to expose the window.

If there is an open Tunnelblick window and you can cancel out of a window this way, you should be able to quit Tunnelblick. Then follow the instructions in Uninstalling Tunnelblick 3.1 & 3.2.

If there are no open windows or the Tunnelblick icon is still unresponsive, you can kill Tunnelblick from the "Activity Monitor" application (which is in Applications / Utilities).

However, if you kill it that way, it will be relaunched the next time you log in. To prevent that, you must disable it in the "Login Items":
  1. Click the Apple icon in the upper-left corner of the screen and select "System Preferences"
  2. Click on "Users & Groups"
  3. Click on the "Login Items" tab on the right side
  4. Click on Tunnelblick to select the line containing Tunnelblick
  5. Click on the "-" icon in the list at the bottom of the RIGHT side (NOT the "-" icon on the LEFT side)
If no Tunnelblick entry appears in the list in #3, then Tunnelblick won't start when you log in.

Thanks so much for your response - this worked great for me and I have now managed to remove Tunnelblick and stop it launching on start-up (had visions of having to wipe hard disk....).

Now I need to figure out whether to have another go at installing it.  Does anyone have any tips?  I'm on Mac OS X.

Thanks,

Do you have a VPN service provider that supports OpenVPN connections? Tunnelblick is for OpenVPN and does not support PPTP.

Tunnelblick is only for Mac OS X -- what version of OS X are you using? (Click the Apple icon, then "About this Mac" to find out which version.)

What version of Tunnelblick were you installing?

Were you installing from an administrator account? (That shouldn't be necessary, but maybe there's a bug.) The first account you set up on a computer is, by default, an administrator account, but if someone else set up your computer, you may not be logging into an administrator account.

Tips:

(1) Download a fresh copy of Tunnelblick from the official  Downloads page.

(2) Install Tunnelblick 3.2.2 (the latest stable version), not the beta.

(3) Install by double-clicking the downloaded disk image, and then double-clicking the Tunnelblick icon in the window that appears.

(4) When installing, if Tunnelblick encounters certain errors, it waits a few seconds and then tries again. So the installation process can sometimes take 30 or 40 seconds. That's unusual -- it usually takes a couple of seconds -- but it can happen.

(5) Inspect "All Messages" in the Console Log for error messages. (You can search for "Tunnelblick" in the upper-right corner of Console to fitler out irrelevant messages).

Thanks again.  Very helpful.
I'm on Mac OS X 10.5.8, and am working from an administrator account.  I might have been installing the beta version though, instead of the 3.2.2 version.  I've just re-downloaded and checked the console log, and have no error messages.

Have just gone through the set up steps again - and it seems to be working.  So thanks very much for your great responses, you're a star!  I was expecting to spend Easter weekend trying to sort this out!
