tunnelblick ERROR: could not read Auth username/password/ok/string from management

I'm trying to use Tunnelblick v 3.17 with openvpn on mac osx 1.6.8. I
have successfully installed it an used in on my old powerpc running
mac osx 1.5.something, but I can't get it to work on this newer mac

You should get tech support from your VPN service provider, BTGuard, because you are paying them, not Tunnelblick. (Tunnelblick is free software which is recommended by many VPN service providers.)

That said, it may be that all you need to do is un-check "Monitor connection" for the configuration you are trying to connect to.
