Hello,

I have version 3.5.3 on OS X 10.10.4, Hackintosh, system never sleeps, runs all the time and I connect to commercial vpn service. The service seems to "kick" all connections out once in a while, my ppp connectional always disconnected at least overnight if not during day.
Tunnelblick is configured with password in the keychain and connecting is flawless and quick - select the profile and connection is done automatically. The icon changes from black center to white center, excellent speeds and everything works perfectly. MUCH better than ppp vpn I was using before.

However, after some time the connection seems lost and reconnected. At least that is what I think the log means.  Unluckily, there are problems with reconnection I am unable to identify:
1. Tunnelblick icon changes into oscillating grey center

2. When I put my mouse over the icon, the dark tunnelblick field with usually green text has now yellow text with message "Waiting for password". Note, the password is in the keychain and I do not need to type it in anytime.
My console shows, that about every hour this line:
7/21/15 6:31:47.138 PM Tunnelblick[62148]: Keychain item retrieved successfully for service = 'Tunnelblick-Auth-VPNProfile' account = 'username'
I think that means the connection is reconnected every hour?

3. Connections still kind of work, but DNS seems slow and screwy, speeds are low and the whole thing seems bit weird.
When I disconnect and immediately reconnect, tunnelblick starts working spectacularly well again, until next disconnect.

I have
Set DNS/WINS: Set nameserver
OpenVPN version : latest (2.3.6)
Monitor network settings ON
Keep connected  ON
Check if IP address changed ON
Reset primary interface : OFF
Flush DNS cache : ON
Prepend domain name;OFF
Disconnect when going to sleep ON (but computer never sleeps)
Reconncet : ON (but again, it never sleeps)

and VPN credentials are stored for my user name...
...

Any suggestions, please?

Thanks

J.

Usually I would ask you to follow the instructions at Read Before You Post to get the info needed to diagnose problems.

But in your case, you've supplied enough other info that that isn't all needed. Just wait until the problem happens (and the Tunnelblick icon is oscillating) and then click the "Copy Diagnostic Info to Clipboard" button. Then paste the Clipboard into a reply.

(You needn't try the beta or do anything else in those instructions, which are generalized enough to help find problems that you don't have.)

Remove the "persist-tun" line from the configuration file. That can cause problems like the one you described, depending on the specifics of the client configuration and the server's configuration and the routing and other activity that the VPN connection entails.

You should also probably remove the check from "Run MTU maximum size test after connecting" on the "While Connected" tab of the "Advanced" settings window. That only needs to be used when there are suspected connection problems (which I admit you might have but isn't the cause of the problem of waiting for the username/password).

The "runTunnelblickd: no data available from tunnelblickd socket; sleeping…" messages are normal and don't indicate anything wrong.

message is more troubling but I Tunnelblick doesn't (knowingly) use ShareKit, so I assume it isn't a problem.

I suppose either of the last two could have to do with being run on a Hackintosh, but that's just a guess.

Hello,

thank you very much for the suggestions, I did as suggested and Tunnelblick run stable over night but since morning I seem to have same problems... I am attaching new log now, may be something else popped up?

I notice this:

2015-07-22 12:04:36 WARNING: Since you are using --dev tun with a point-to-point topology, the second argument to --ifconfig must be an IP address. You are using something (255.255.255.0) that looks more like a netmask. (silence this warning with --ifconfig-nowarn)

which is from the configuration info being "pushed" from the server to your client computer.

That looks like a problem. I vaguely recall something on an OpenVPN mailing list about this in the past few months. I think that at some point (years ago, perhaps) OpenVPN changed the parameters to ifconfig, and the documentation isn't corrected yet. Or there was some problem, anyway, I suggest you ask about this on the OpenVPN Users mailing list at https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/openvpn-users.

Also, are you sure you want to use your own "10.10.0.1" nameserver? That's unusual.

Hello,

finally I got to test more and search the openvpn forum. Basically I do not have fully functional solution, but it kind of works.

Main improvement was to remove the 10.0.0.1 as name server. This address, which is my home router, is not accessible through the vpn and it caused lots of issues in seemingly lost connections. Removal has reduced the general problems.

The other suggestions are fine, but this is commercial vpn service and I have no control of what they push to me. I tried various local changes and eventually gave up.

The green screen goes to yellow after first hour, when the Tunelblick kills the key and relogs in the server again. It also changes the icon to oscillating between open and closed tunnel. Even if the connection keeps working or not, the icon and screen are the same (oscillating and yellow). Disconnecting and reconnecting solves all of the problems. Generally works for about 6-12 hours i a row before I need to restart it.

So, not perfect, but usable. If I get really annoyed,I can write some apple script which will restart this every hour and be done with it.

Thanks for the help with this problem...

Thanks for the update. You shouldn't have to put up with losing the connection after an hour!

Removing "persist-tun" from your configuration file should fix that problem.

OpenVPN reconnects every hour as a security precaution. Including "persist-tun" causes OpenVPN to do only a partial disconnect/reconnect, and something in the configuration (probably the routing) is causing that partial disconnect/reconnect to fail. (That is actually very, very common.) Removing "persist-tun" should cause OpenVPN to do a more complete disconnect before trying to reconnect, which should fix the problem.

If removing "persist-tun" doesn't help, please post the diagnostic info after (or during) the failed "cycling" that happens after an hour. Perhaps there is something else going on.

Hello,

I actually think, that I do not loose connection after hour - more like overnight or after few hours. And that may simply be the service shedding long time users to save bandwidth - when I was using PPP connection, service always kicked me off overnight.

Here is current log, which shows that after an hour the connection is reestablished successfully:

What is confusing is, that while connection seems working and data are for sure flowing (and fast actually), the status field when I put my mouse of the Tuneblick icon has yellow text "Waiting for password" and the icon is oscillating between open and close state. So I think this is more of cosmetic problem.

Per my family observations, they need to disconnect/reconnect the vpn about about twice a day, when they really loose the data connection.

Not sure what those errors in this log are, but do not seem that harmful.

Thanks for any help!.

The partial log you posted isn't much help.

Please use the Copy Diagnostic Info to Clipboard button while "the icon is oscillating between open and close state".

I think it is likely that, although you think the VPN is active, it is not. And that is why your connection is so fast -- you aren't using the VPN!

Hm,

my IP resolves to the vpn IP for web access as well as other programs I am using, so I think all my outside traffic is sent through the vpn.

Here is the diagnostic report. This is after 13 hours or so of connection. Tunelblick icon/info screen indicated "Waiting for password" but all connections seem to work and the whatismyip.com was showing me as having the vpn IP address.
