In this blog, we shine a light on a few ocean nomads members to inspire you that if it can be dreamt, it can be done and by supporting our ocean brothers and sisters! We are proud to have them part of the Ocean Nomads network. All of them welcome fellow ocean nomads on board to share the adventures.
We met Robert & Kyra 3 years ago when they hitchhiked by sailboat into the Canary Islands. They manifested their dream boat. They spent more than a year refitting and fixing and now set sail living the dream exploring exotic places.
They made it safe and sound to Gambia! With the extra hands on deck of ocean nomad Jan. They found out about each other through the ocean nomads network. And we are so happy that safe and meaningful adventures are being lived out there thanks to the ocean nomads network.
Our Brianna met up with them in Las Palmas a couple weeks ago to catch up and also say farewell. We are so happy for them and their first long (safe) passage after a long refit with lots of obstacles, but they did it. And what an adventure they have ahead!
We met Andi and Jess earlier this year in the Caribbean. We handed over the Ocean Nomads Sourdough starter that Brianna and Dani brought on board on the other side of the pond. They just purchased their own vessel, Tixi Lixi and are now making her ready to sail away. Andy has been an Ocean Nomads ambassador from the very start. We love having his happy positive vibes and ocean ambassadoring on board and are looking forward to follow and support on their journeys to come. Lots of crew possibilities coming up!

Equipped with a new state-of-the-art ocean-going research vessel, which can also sail in the Arctic, Danish marine researchers will continue to be able to contribute valuable knowledge about the climate and sustainable fishing.
The new vessel will replace the current research vessel Dana IV, which after 40 years at sea is being retired. The new multidisciplinary research vessel provides Danish marine research environments with a world-class modern research infrastructure with a global and Arctic reach that can support oceanographic and climate research and lead to our understanding of lifecycles and biodiversity in the oceans and of marine geography and fisheries.
Since 1977, a number of vessels have served in the Sea Shepherd fleet to protect marine wildlife in direct-action campaigns around the world. Today our international fleet includes over a dozen ships and smaller boats used in various ocean conservation campaigns.
4 long years had passed since I quit my job as a marine engineer, Greece had gone through a bankruptcy, a serious situation that delayed my voyage and put me through a lot of jobs until I manage to collect enough funds and the courage to start my Circumnavigation.
I had just completed the Aegean Rally, said goodbye to most of my friends, packed all my belongings and I took the bus to Lefkas where Nala was waiting for me, a 6-hour drive that I spent mostly planning the trip that lay ahead, I had finally found a boat that I can afford, but was she ready to cross oceans? could she carry me safely to the distant shores of my choosing? little I knew by then but was soon to figure out!
I went off the bus outside of the yard and there she was there on the cradle waiting for me, Nala has been laying on the hard for 3 years before the previous owner decided to put her for sale, he bought her back in 2000 with the plan to cross the Atlantic, spent 5 years re-fitting her and then left from Britany Franche to the med, during the trip he injured his back, a very serious injury that made it impossible to continue his dream and had to take multiple operations, he was very excited to find out that I had the same dreams and was very helpful explaining his systems and the setup for single handling.
Stefanos and Giorgios arrived a few days after and quickly we arranged with the yard to splash Nala back in the water, the day had finally come! my pocket cruiser was ready to spread her canvas and sail to unknown horizons! or that was what I thought, I started the motor, went to pay the yard bill and 20 minutes later the motor was dead, we spent 4 hours troubleshooting and we figure out that the problem was clogged supply cooper lines.
The next part of our trips was to Cruise the Ionian sea for 2 weeks with Stefanos, Giorgos, and Odyseas a third friend who decided to help me sail Nala to Athens, but nothing is an easy deal especially with a new to you boat! We put the sails on and soon we realized that the genoa was impossible to furl! there was a cap missing on the top of the forestay which resulted in the halyard wrapping around the stay, i was really glad that we had no wind that day!
