I'm a Helix owner and recently purchased a JTV-69. I am fairly new to JTV and Variax HD, but I was wondering if it would be possible to have Variax generate/transmit MIDI notes to say Helix for use with hardware or software MIDI instruments. Maybe this could be set as one of the Variax Custom models.
Checking technical feasibility here before considering posting to Ideascale. I'm not too optomistic though since from what I read, it looks like only mag signal, model signal and Variax control back is transmitted over VDI.
None of the Variax models, Standard, HD, JTV or whatever is capable of doing "Guitar to Midi" conversion that you're after. It's an interesting notion though - it has been posted on Ideascale quite a few times, but some of that was more than a year back so don't hold your breath.
Anyhow as your Variax does not have MIDI capable pickups maybe the next best option is to investigate the Fishman Triple Play system. I have no experience with the Fishman but I used to use a Roland GR33 synth and GK 2A divided pickup - (I was not very impressed with the sounds).
Jam Origin App is free to try but has a built in interrupt that will make it useless for anything other than testing. You will be prompted for an in-app purchase to activate the App properly. I tested it on a PC using an HD500 as an interface and it worked fairly well, but I couldn't suppress the guitar sound and get the synth output out from the HD500 - a Helix can do that though
You could add you vote to this idea, but I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for it to happen - it basically suggested a mode on JTV where it swaps modelling for MIDI conversion (string by string) with output via an HD500 or these days a Helix:
As far as I understand the Variax does not even detect pitch, it only assumes you are in the standard tuning for applying alternate tuning. Without detecting pitch, note to midi notes would be impossible.
A way around is adding a Roland GK hex mic. I experimented with mounting a Roland GK2A to my Variax JTV69F - a bit tight with space - to control a VG99. However I'm allergic to the steam punk looks of it  I'm thinking about fitting the Roland GK-Kit-GT3 inside the guitar. The real problem would be to drill for the GK connector...
I have background music for some songs available in both .MID and .KAR formats, but in each case it's being played somewhat faster than I'd like. What's the simplest way to create either .MID or .KAR files with the same content but at a slower tempo -- say, one slowed down by 20% or so, another by 15%, a third by 25%, and so on?
Ideally, I'd prefer a cross-platform Python script (since that would allow me to easily experimentally tweak the source to converge to the exact effect I want;-), but I'll take any free solution that runs in Linux (Ubuntu 8.04 if it matters) and Mac (Mac OS X 10.5, but 10.6 compatibility preferred).
This is a midi-to-text converter (and vice-versa):
I've been using it quite a bit lately. it's pretty trivial to do text processing (e.g. searching for line with "Tempo") for simple operations once you have the midifile as text. haven't tried on mac (compiled with no problem on ubuntu 8.04).
Regarding midifile tempo specifically, it's really easy to slow down or speed up playback since the timing of events is specified in terms of "ticks", whose real duration in seconds is determined by the tempo parameter described in Vinko's quote. I believe time signature is not so relevant, and is mainly for displaying bars/beats correctly when opened in a midi sequencer.
This meta event sets thesequence tempo in terms ofmicroseconds per quarter-note which isencoded in three bytes. It usually isfound in the first track chunk,time-aligned to occur at the same timeas a MIDI clock message to promotemore accurate synchronization. If noset tempo event is present, 120 beatsper minute is assumed. The followingformula's can be used to translate thetempo from microseconds perquarter-note to beats per minute andback.
If you are like me then you are listening to the same songs 7 years later and can give this a try! Otherwise, I hope this helps someone else who woke up today like me and was scratching my head trying to solve this problem easily.
With four banks of 16 encoders, the Midi Fighter Twister allows control of any parameter in any software. You can easily customize layouts to suit your favorite setups, giving you a smooth and intuitive workflow.

I'm no stranger to modding XML files for Serato. I've done tons of stuff on Push 2, APC40 mk2, Traktor (F1, X1, Z1, 2), tons of Pioneer gear, Denon gear, Rane gear, Roland gear, Reloop, and more. However, this device doesn't seem to hold settings and/or doesn't communicate with Serato properly. For example, I can map out stems, including modifiers, to handle the software, but the RGB does not correspond if the command is sent from either the mixer or the software. Additionally, the same XML file that works for handling various functions will work... sometimes.... That is, I may need to unplug/replug the Twister, then restore midi defaults on Serato, then reload the XML... often multiple times... to get the Twister to work. Not using a hub. Not changing the XML. Everything else works fine, and works every single time. Only the Twister that is just randomly failing. As a touring professional, it's to the point that I've removed it from my live performance setup because it's simply unreliable. I hate to say that. I've been a long time DJTT customer, and will be in the future - just not for their home designed products until they have better support and documentation.
