I was trying to test our products to make sure that they are compatible with Windows Server 2016. And during some testing, I mistakenly thought that I can simply "downgrade" .NET framework from 4.6 to 4. So I removed .NET 4.6 from Roles and from IIS.

Now, I can't install it back using installer (because its part of OS so it is asking me to enable it from role & features). And I can't start server manager (to install role & features) because it needs .Net 4 at minimum.

My problem:On Windows Server 2016, the .NET Framework 4.6 had been inadvertently uninstalled from my system while trying to fix some issues with IIS. It was removed using the Server Manager > Remove Roles and Features.

As a result, the Power Shell, Server Manager, and Event Viewer were no longer working. So I downloaded and installed the latest offline version of the .NET Framework 4.7 from Microsoft using the installer. However, it did not fix the problem when installed by clicking on the installer.

SolutionTo fix the problem, I had to install it from the command line using the "/all" switch. I unzipped the installer to a folder and here is the command that I used to install it. In the last argument in quotes is the path to the installer, which will need to be modified based on where you have the installer unzipped:

A Windows program [yWriter7.exe] will not install because .net framework 4.8 is missing. I use OS 16.3 Lite. Wine is current and works with other programs. Windows App Support and Mono both give the missing error message. The yWriter site [Spacejock] has tips for installing on Linux, and they didn't work, either. So, a usual plea for help with this. Thanks in advance.

Dot NET is available in Ubuntu without need for Wine or Winetricks. I have it installed (and have for a long time). I highly recommend the APT version.
The Snap lacks functionality due to its container.

Installed it per your command line. Winetricks opens with a list of apps and no option to find another one. Running 'winetricks dothet48' resulted in a list of errors ending with -
'warning: This package (dotnet48) is broken in wine-6.0.3.'

You could grab a Win VM image and use VirtualBox to run the software; if nothing else works. I haven't tried with POL or Bottles, not sure if either of those would help though.. You could use Wine Tricks to use Wine v3 to install V5 or V6 yWriter - but V6 shows 'Garbage' as the result..

If you look through your apps in wine uninstaller - does .Net4.8 show up? I don't remember having to do anything after installing, just running the app - but this app isn't tested beyond version 3.... so that may be a lot of the problems.. Mono and Gecko installed? I see in most of the notes that Mono is required to run.

I have the same issue here. It was running few days ago on earlier version and then I tried to update to 2.6.9 it said that it requires .net 4.7.x but i have the latest .net already installed on my Windows 10 Pro.

Did you ever resolve this? I have the same problem... 4.7.2 is installed on my machine, but SourceTree continues to complain that it needs 4.7.1 - however, I can't install that version because Windows says I already have a later version

I can't even use the uninstaller or installer for Sourcetree when I was troubleshooting since it checks specifically checks for 4.7.1 I'm sure there's a workaround but when you can't even uninstall because of an issue there's a problem here >.>

From start menu open, "Visual Studio Installer". This will prompt a screen to modify your existing visual studio product. Select "Modify". This will open a Modifying VS2017 screen and from the installation details on the right you can check which .Net frameworks are available under ".Net desktop development" drop down menu. Select preferred .Net framework and click Modify at the bottom right corner with "Install while downloading" option selected.

This will solve the problem!!

For these past few months I have been trying to install The Sims 3 on Origin. I have already tried to uninstall and reinstall but not luck. Problem is: When clicking on The Sims 3 I get a Microsoft box 'Windows Features requirement of net framework 3.5.' I have seen online forums people posting on EA help.com that people didn't need to install the 3.5 net framework. Any advice would be great as I am preparing for the move to the EA APP.

@Naweeya Sims 3 definitely requires .NET Framework 3.5 whether you're playing through Origin or the EA App (or disc or Steam). Normally, Windows would install it as the game calls for it without the user needing to do anything except agree to it. It sounds like you might be getting this prompt, and if so, just accept it.

Or you can install manually. Hit Windows key-R and enter "appwiz.cpl" without quotes, then click "Turn Windows features on or off." .NET 3.5 should be at the top of the list. If the box next to it is empty, click it to install, and when it's finished, restart your computer. If the box is filled, that means it's already installed. Click the box to uninstall, restart your computer, then install is as above and restart again.

I am facing a similar issue with Windows 11 and have followed your steps by running the appwiz.cpl, clicked the box for 3.5 but receive an error message when windows attempts to download the relevant files. The error code is 0x80240023. Is this because internet explorer is retired? I am unable to download or activate Framework 3.5 and downloaded newer versions but without luck getting the sims 3 to run. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

hi i'm literally having the same problem as the guy above and ive tried most of ur solutions but it still doesn't work. its just when i try the repair install, the button in the 3rd step doesnt appear. what to do, please?

yeah none of the options above worked. so i bought the sims 3 for the first time and whenever i try to launch it, a pop up appears saying i have to download net framework 3.5, so when i try to download it i get an error message.

@Mikey009556 I do think you need to run a repair install, but your C drive doesn't have enough space to download a Windows 11 ISO. Please clear another 20 GB or so, in whatever way works for you. Your D drive has plenty of free space, so it shouldn't be too difficult.

If option two for the repair install still doesn't work, please let me know exactly how it doesn't work: what step you're on, any error message you get, etc. I've seen this exact .NET error before, and the repair install was the only fix short of reinstalling Windows, which I'm sure you don't want to do.

@Mikey009556 Move important stuff to D, temporarily. You can't move applications there by dragging and dropping, but for example you can move the contents of Photos or Documents. If C is full of applications, uninstall a few for now; you can reinstall them later.

I am using Ubuntu 14.04. I want to use Multicharts,a windows application using wine. Multicharts requires .net framework 3.5. Is it possible to install. I have 64 bit OS.I found code below on different question.

the english program run fine and my autocad is installed and run without any problem, so i downloaded the language pack (italian in my case) for 64bit and 2015 version, but the installer exe won't run cause it say it's missing framework.net 4.5

so.. how i can solve?

if i download the framework 4.5 from windows's page the installer say that 4.5 or above is alredy installed (the same for 4.5.1 and 4.5.2 - 4.5.0.9, didn't tryed something else )

We are trying to get TOAD 4.6 installed on a Windows 2003 32-bit server, but kept encountering the .NET Framework error complaining that the latest MS .Net framework is missing. See attached image "dotNetFrameworkError.jpg".

However, we have already installed .net Framework 3.5 and even 4.0. See attached image "dotNetFrameworkList.jpg" for complete listing of .net Framework installed on the server. The error still kept popping up. Any thoughts?

You can install .NET Framework 4.8.1 from our .NET Framework Download site. For building applications targeting .NET Framework 4.8.1, you can download the NET Framework 4.8.1 Developer Pack. If you just want the runtime, you can use either:

.NET Framework 4.8.1 includes native support for the Arm64 architecture (Windows 11+) and accessibility improvements as well as other improvements. You can see the complete list of improvements in the .NET Framework 4.8.1 release notes.

.NET Framework 4.8.1 adds native Arm64 support to the .NET Framework family. So, your investments in the vast ecosystem of .NET Framework apps and libraries can now leverage the benefits of running workloads natively on Arm64 for better performance when compared to running x64 code emulated on Arm64.

In this release, both Windows Forms and WPF have made improvements to the handling of tooltips to enable them to be more accessible. In both cases, tooltips now comply with the guidelines setforth in the WCAG2.1 content on Hover or Focus guidance. The requirements for tooltips require the following:

In WinForms, this support is only available on Windows 11 or higher operating system. WinForms is a thin managed wrapper around the Windows API, and the new tooltip behavior only became available in Windows 11. WPF has no operating system version dependencies for their accessible tooltips.

WPF had implemented most of the requirements for WCAG2.1 compliant tooltips in .NET Framework 4.8. In this release WPF improved the experience by ensuring that a tooltip in the current window can easily be dismissed by using the ESC key, the CTRL key (by itself), or by the combination Ctrl+Shift+F10. The scope of the Escape key was reduced in this release to apply only to the current window, when previously it would have been any open tooltip in the application.

Did the system requirements change? In this blog post it lists Windows Server 2022 as the only supported server OS. But .NET 4.8 supports Windows Server 1803+, Server 2019 and Server 2022. Did a patch release of 4.8 just drop support for an entire family of server products?
