where should I host images ?

my theme features some background patterns and images. Where should I host them ?
I understand that tumblr accepts only html code as the theme, right ?
Should I host them on my own server ?

hehe, yes I can see that, but I was wondering how do I go about preserving paths to the links...
I suppose I need to keep everything in one folder
