(If you hate reading, skip to the section titled "bottom line"!)
This Google Group provides a pretty good help community for Tumblr theme designers. However, it is largely unmoderated, and most posts are one-time help requests that can't be easily referenced for future use. That can change!
I propose that we migrate this Tumblr Themes group to a Stack Exchange site. Stack Exchange is the network and infrastructure that powers Q&A sites like
Stack Overflow,
Server Fault, and
Super User. The
expanding set of Stack Exchange sites also includes software-specific sites such as
Drupal Answers and lighthearted sites such as
LEGO Answers. Seeing as there is a wide variety of Stack Exchange sites, and, in particular, noting the presence of Drupal Answers (Drupal is another CMS/blogging platform), I feel that a Stack Exchange site for Tumblr (or at least for Tumblr theming) would be appropriate and greatly helpful.
Why Stack Exchange? Stack Exchange sites are super organized, answers can be edited for clarity, and there are clear guidelines for what belongs and what doesn't. It's also a cinch to create an account and log in, and users can gain reputation so that the community can pick out more reliable answers.
If you like this idea, please respond. If there are no replies, I probably won't do anything. But if a lot of people concur—
How do we start a new site? Stack Exchange has established a method of introducing new Stack Exchange sites — a site called
Area 51 (which is itself a Stack Exchange site). How does Area 51 work?
Their FAQ does a good job of explaining. If
people respond to this post affirmatively (a "I like!" reply would do), then I will submit an Area 51 proposal to create a Tumblr Stack Exchange site.
Keep in mind that once we make the proposal, people need to commit to the proposal on Area 51. Please stayed tuned if you want this to happen — check back once every few days. Once we have enough commits, we need enough people actually using the group while it's in beta. Again, please check back here or check the proposal once it's made.
Bottom line:
- This group is kind of like Stack Overflow, but it isn't as nice as Stack Overflow. We change that by creating a Tumblr Stack Exchange site.
- Please reply if this sounds like a good idea.
- If we propose a Stack Exchange site, we need people to commit and to use the beta site for it to become a reality.
Thanks for reading and please reply!
Please note that I am a representative of neither Tumblr nor Stack Exchange, but a user and big fan of both.
